🗞️ No province for women
Plus, program to support vulnerable residents in emergencies urging people to sign up, police say no foul play in Walmart death and Canada Post says parties remain far apart.
Good morning Halifax,
Just when you start to feel all tired and jaded, and you think these politicians are really just in it for themselves and don’t give a rat’s about you or me, the universe delivers a sign that makes you stop and reconsider it all.
Over the weekend, I was taking my orange cat Frank for a carry around the neighbourhood when I ran into Lisa Lachance and her wife Heather campaigning in the area. Lisa had an Eras Tour sweatshirt on and I was like “Eeeek! I’m going on Friday” and she stared me dead into my soul and said “I couldn’t go because of this election…” 😳
That’s right, she had to MISS the concert of the century so that she could run her re-election campaign for Halifax Citadel-Sable Island. I gotta say, it certainly couldn’t be me, but you have got to admire her commitment to the cause.
We should collectively demand that all of the people running for political office are willing to metaphorically miss Taylor Swift for us. And I feel like the very least we can do in recognition of her making the ultimate sacrifice is to get off of our lazy butts on Nov 26 and vote!
Love and light out there!
– Julie

NEWS + OPINION
Training + education = healthy province + less death

When it comes to issues of public health, the equation is pretty simple: education + training = less death. The government believes in this equation, which is why they continue to fund health promotion and wellness programs and initiatives to the tune of millions of dollars each year. They get it; if we can take steps to prevent bad things from happening to people, we should.
But what about the extremely preventable gender-based violence epidemic that has permeated every corner of our lives? The insidious disease that has infected our province, that is hurting and killing more people each and every day? Why doesn’t the same equation apply?
Dee Dooley is the sexual violence advisor at Saint Mary’s University, where she works in SMU’s sexual violence support centre. She is also currently working on her doctorate in education, looking specifically at how we can prevent this kind of violence from occurring.
