🗞️ Student encampment begins following release of demands

Plus, over 10,000 HRM landlords join mandatory registry

Happy Monday Halifax!

I hope all the moms out there were spoiled by their skin and/or fur babies.

Last week we asked you what you think of the Bud the Spud of it all and the results are in. Who should take Bud’s place outside the old library on Spring Garden? NOBODY! #JusticeForBud led the way with 65% of the vote, followed at a distance by An Actual Car-Free Spring Garden.

Just some potatoes for thought as you start your week!

Make it a good one.

EDUCATION

BREAKING: Student encampment at Dal begins Sunday following release of demands over the weekend

Credit: Lauren Phillips / The Coast

Tents are up in front of the Henry Hicks administration building on Dalhousie’s Studley Campus.

A coalition of students across four Halifax universities—using the name Students for the Liberation of Palestine—renamed the space where tents are located as “Al Zeitoun” University, meaning “olive” in Arabic.

Students from NSCAD, SMU, Dal and King’s read their lists of demands aloud in a circle and were joined by faculty and community members who voiced their support for the organized student action.

In a social media post on Friday, the student coalition called on their universities “to immediately disclose and divest from any investments that sustain settler-colonial projects, including the Zionist state known as Israel.”
