Good morning.

I know there’s plenty in Halifax and Nova Scotia to talk about, but I need to mention the fake email phishing scam that plagued Newfoundland and Labrador healthcare workers on Wednesday.

That morning, I woke up to several messages from friends and family who work in the province’s healthcare system about a fake phishing email that promised the June holiday off—June 17th, to be specific. It’s a John Cabot thing. I don’t understand it, but that’s irrelevant.

I say fake phishing because this email came from the health department’s own cybersecurity branch—whether this was a third-party contractor or a government department itself, I am not sure.

The problem is, like Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador’s healthcare system is stretched incredibly thin, and has been for a long time. So, as you can imagine, a fake phishing attempt promising workers who have to book their vacation time a year in advance a day off is more than just annoying. It’s down right antagonizing.

I bring this up partly because of how baffling this is, but also because it’s important to keep in mind how essential our healthcare workers are and how we shouldn’t take that for granted.

Simplicity, generosity, hospitality: Trattoria Vesso’s key ingredients

Contributed

Walk into Trattoria Vesso on the corner of Hollis and Morris Street in Halifax at lunch and you’ll see exactly what a trattoria is supposed to be. A business meeting unfolds beside a family with young children. A couple shares a pizza while another table passes around antipasti before bowls of fresh pasta arrive. A dock worker stops at the bar for a quick espresso before heading to work. Nobody seems rushed. Nobody appears out of place.

For Chef Vesso Mrakic, that’s entirely intentional.

👀 In Case You Missed It

📱 When Conrad Scotchburn first arrived in Halifax, it wasn't with dreams of launching a startup. The recent graduate of Saint Mary's University came to Nova Scotia to play basketball. Growing up in Saudi Arabia, Scotchburn was raised in a diverse international community where service and connection were central values. His father had played university basketball, and following in those footsteps eventually brought him to Halifax after a year in Calgary pursuing opportunities to compete at the collegiate level. “My dad played university basketball. I always wanted to play university basketball, so I was really making a push to do that." While injuries eventually led him away from competitive basketball, they opened the door to another passion: entrepreneurship with a social purpose. The Coast’s Warren D’Silva speaks with Scotchburn about the Blyyss app and how it helps people reduce their grocery spending.

🏚️ An apartment building was demolished despite a residential tenancy order that said a resident had until the end of September to vacate—the tenant involved says they had no choice but to vacate when the demolition began, with Dal Legal Aid calling it an illegal demoviction.

📖 A Holocaust denialist meme found its way into a West Bedford yearbook as a quote from one of the students—the school is recalling and reprinting the books to remove the hateful message.

That’s it!
