🗞️ There's always next year
Plus, the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia's new exhibits, the new justice minister puts his foot down, and Nova Scotia's new housing critic blames Houston for renting woes.
Happy Wednesday, Halifax
I got too distracted by the worlds worst sport yesterday to talk about what might be my new favourite, all thanks to a little, lesser-known team called the Toronto Blue Jays. Ever heard of them?
Jokes aside, all of Canada watched as the Jays lost Game 7 of the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers last Saturday (going into Sunday) in part due to an unfortunate double play after Alejandro Kirk’s bat broke after hitting the final pitch of the game. The game was tense all the way through, and while it ended in disappointment, I believe it’s safe to say that most everyone enjoyed the Jays’ postseason run, especially their back and forth series against the formidable Dodgers.
As I’ve made it known before, I’m not much of a sports head. I watch playoff hockey, the occasional basketball game, and it was only last year that I truly started getting into baseball. While I’m aware of the common adage that the postseason is always more fun than the regular season, I think I’m finally hooked on a sport. Getting to know the varying personalities and skill sets each player brought to the team, all in hopes of making it to the end, was something truly magical.
While I’m not super into sports, I am very much into sports anime and manga (Slam Dunk? Hajime no Ippo? Anyone? Hello?) I’ve always tried to understand why I love stories about subject matter that usually wouldn’t interest me, and I think this Jays season finally taught me what it is. It’s the idea of all these characters with different goals and different backgrounds teaming up to accomplish a singular dream that if they can just push hard enough, they might be able to achieve.
That’s how I felt watching the Jays this postseason. It felt like storytelling in real time, and although it certainly didn’t end the way any of us wanted, the story is never truly finished. There’s always next year.
Best,
– B

The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia (AGNS) launches its fall season on Saturday, Nov. 8, and with it comes three exclusive exhibitions from varying artists that will leave onlookers speechless.
From the wooden masks of Mi’kmaw artist Gordon Sparks, the pastoral landscape works of African American/Canadian artist Edward Mitchell Bannister, to the enlightening video installation detailing the names and faces of those who participated in John Baldessari’s 1971 “Punishment Piece”, AGNS has something for everyone during their fall season.

👀 In Case You Missed It
🎶 Loviet has been an artist on my radar since I started exploring the Halifax music scene. Her blend of alt aesthetics and moody tunes with pop production was my jam, and her new single “Stiffy” only shows she’s leaning more in a rock direction. She has another single dropping on Nov. 7 titled “Cheerleader”. Stylish, savvy and sick with a guitar, Loviet is the definition of cool. The Coast’s Brendyn Creamer chats with musician Loviet about coming back to play in Yarmouth, reactions to her last single, and what fans can expect next, all in part one of our Nova Scotia Music Week Interview Series.
🚨 A man is dead after a shooting in North Preston late Sunday afternoon—police say they received a report of gunshots near the intersection of Cain and Clarence streets and that the investigation is being led by the Major Crimes Unit.
🏈 After years of waiting, the failed Halifax CFL franchise the Atlantic Schooners have set up a website for fans who made deposits on tickets to get their money back—the franchise originally launched it’s season tickets drive in 2018.
That’s it!
