Good morning!
This is the final day where we can vote for Editor Jules in the Super Mom competition. She is in 8th place and needs a Herculean push to get through the semi-finals and make it to the final 8.
I know she would hate for me to say this, but I'm going to do it anyway: Julie cares about The Coast and this newsletter so much and works her butt off to make it funny and informative and relevant—and she does it for not much money.
You know as well as I do that I don’t hold a candle to Julie’s wit, patience, and ability to deal with the nonsense that floods our email inboxes. She’s truly a one-of-a-kind newsletter editor, and she does it all for you—the readers.
She has also had the worst year imaginable and needs the universe to deliver something positive. I think the least we could all do to show our thanks is to rally around her today and see if we can get her through to the finals.
Please vote as much as you can. Let’s get our beloved editor over the finish line.

OPINION
Peace does not begin with silence
In 1957, at the height of the Cold War, scientists from across the world travelled to a small village on the Northumberland Strait to talk about nuclear weapons, global annihilation, and what it would take to pull the world back from the edge of catastrophe. They came in spite of their differences. In spite of long-held hostilities. What emerged was the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs — one of the most significant peace movements of the twentieth century, and a Nobel Peace Prize recipient in 1995.
The idea at the heart of it became known as the Pugwash spirit: that you can sit across a table from those you disagree with, speak uncomfortable truths, and still work toward something better.
On May 3, 2026, I stood on a stage in Pugwash, Nova Scotia, to deliver a TEDx talk called “On Silence, and Ending Violence.” My argument was simple, even if the subject matter was not: peace does not begin with silence.

Low mood doesn't always look obvious. Sometimes it feels like going through the motions and wondering why nothing feels enjoyable anymore. One helpful tip is to reconnect with an activity you once enjoyed, even briefly. If that feels difficult, counselling can help you find your way forward.

🪧 A tentative agreement has been reached between long-term care workers and the province according to the union—the eight-week action has seen 3,600 workers on strike as they asked for higher wages.
🏠 A contentious housing development in Musquodoboit Harbour funded by John Wesley Chisholm has been canned with Chisholm selling the land and cutting his losses—this is due to the province declaring part of his property a special planning zone for a new long-term care home without reaching a sale agreement with Chisholm after 19 months of trying.
