Good morning!

I received a really great comment from the article posted yesterday: Halifax is the fourth most expensive city to rent in, according to new report. While I usually don’t bring up the comments we receive, either because they’re really mean or I don’t think they hold water, the criticism I received was pertinent and I wanted to ensure it was addressed.

In the article, I initially failed to outline how Zumper, who released the report in question, gets its data. Zumper is a real estate website with listings for rental properties across the country. The “About” section of their page speaks briefly about their methodology: they use these listings, aggregated on a monthly basis, to calculate median rent costs in a given city. This makes their data differ from other reports that take into account units that are already occupied, who may be paying rent at a lower cost than the unit listings on Zumper.

Another thing I wanted to mention was that many of Halifax’s rental problems are legislative in nature. Nova Scotia has fairly lax rental standards. They allow fixed-term leases that essentially act as a loophole for the five percent annual rent cap. Renovictions are unfortunately all too common. When a ruling is made in tenancy court, there isn’t much of a way for the court to enforce the order it gives to a landlord. Furthermore, if a unit is vacated for any reason, the landlord doesn’t need to follow the five percent rent cap and can jack up the price.

These are major issues that put all too much power into the hands of landlords and leave tenants in the dust. If you ever wonder why the average rent costs have changed so quickly over the last few years, here’s your reason.

These notes have also been made in the article above. I appreciate the commenter who questioned us on this article—I sometimes feel like I’m in an echo chamber when I talk about rental issues and that leads me to assume people already know about the legislative side of things. That is not the case and is an obvious error on my part.

Have a great day!

Halifax keychain library aims to spread joy, accessibility and community connection

📸 Warren D’Silva

On a quiet stretch of Tower Road in Halifax, a small wooden box filled with colourful keychains has become an unexpected source of joy for neighbours, students, and passersby alike.

The Halifax Keychain Library, created by Jemma Arthur, operates on a simple idea: take a keychain, leave a keychain, or simply stop by and enjoy the experience. But for Arthur, the project is about far more than trinkets.

“I just wanted to create sort of like a joy spot in the community,” Arthur says. “A place where people can exchange trinkets and keychains.”
