Good morning!
I’m writing this before we know the results of the Super Mom semi-finals, but regardless of how it’s going for our amazing editor Julie, I wanted to reiterate just how proud all of us at The Coast are of her strength and tenacity in the face of hardship. She’s the best, and I am personally blessed to know her.
On a completely different note, if you’re looking for something to do this weekend, I highly encourage you to check out the Food for the Ears festival at Alderney Landing. Ethan and his team have really elevated this one-of-a-kind celebration of local music, and it’s all for a good cause. You can have a good time and feel good about it!
On another completely different note, happy kick ball to all the soccer fans.
Have a great weekend!

From fiesta stage to festival headliner: Filipino talent takes centre stage in Halifax
📸 Contributed
When Alvaro first stepped onto the stage at the Philippine Fiesta in Halifax three years ago, he was a relatively unknown local performer testing the waters of live music.
This year, the Filipino-Canadian pop artist is returning to the festival as an established performer who has appeared at Nova Scotia Music Week, sung the national anthems at Halifax Thunderbirds games, and is preparing to take the main stage at the TD Halifax Jazz Festival.
For organizers of the annual Philippine Fiesta, Alvaro’s journey represents exactly what the event aims to achieve.
“This isn’t just a festival,” said Micah Lacson, president of the Filipino Cultural Society of Nova Scotia. “It celebrates Filipino identity and heritage, builds community and belonging, and supports local businesses and talent within our community.”

👀 In Case You Missed It
🎵 Sitting outside a Dartmouth coffee shop, Alexander Gallant looks fairly unassuming. A sweater over what’s suspected to be a button-up shirt. Medium-length hair that sometimes flies in front of his face. Two drinks in hand. One potentially caffeinated. The other, some kind of soda. At first glance, Gallant wouldn’t strike the average Joe as royalty; yet, his newest album will see him take a throne that many of us didn’t even know existed. The Prince of Birchy Head is Gallant’s third full-length project, dropping on June 19. A musician with a penchant for the acoustic guitar and folk songwriting, he’s lived quite the life: first as a rock musician in Toronto and now as a settled-down, straight-laced folk artist in the Dartmouth area. The Coast’s Brendyn Creamer chats with Gallant about his new album and the paths he takes while writing his music.
🔋 Nova Scotia has canned environmental assessments for lead battery production in the province, requiring only an industrial approval—the minister of environment hopes this will bring new economic opportunities.
🚨 A multi-vehicle crash in the Highway 103 construction zone on Saturday killed a 65-year-old Ottawa man and seriously injured his passenger—the collision occurred when a truck ignored the temporary traffic lights and struck the man’s SUV.
That’s it!
