Good morning and welcome to whatever time of day it is,

Until today, I thought the strangest thing I would ever attend is a cat show. If you haven’t been to a cat show, I mean, do it. It’s weird and everyone there is strange and the cats look miserable and have no clue where they are. They don’t prance around like dogs, ok? They cling to their cages for dear life so that the judges can’t judge them. Which makes sense because cats are generally like “we’ll be doing the judging around here.”

But I stand corrected because did you know that there are chicken beauty pageants? Those are words that I truly never believed I would type in that order, but here we are.

The Nova Scotia Fall Classic in Truro has brought together hundreds of chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys and pigeons for what can only be described as the poultry equivalent of a beauty pageant. And these birds aren't just showing up looking for a participation ribbon; they're competing for glory, prestige and the coveted title of Best in Show.

Naturally, there are standards. Judges scrutinize everything from posture and body shape to combs, cleanliness and breed characteristics.

I can’t stop picturing the chaos of the backstage preparation for this thing. Hours of grooming, preening and feather maintenance. The pressure to have the perfect profile. The anxiety of knowing that one misplaced feather could destroy your dreams of poultry stardom. Somewhere, a chicken is probably wondering whether her comb makes her look fat.

And I mean, the smell alone.

Then there are the judges, who have travelled considerable distances to determine which bird best meets the accepted standards of avian perfection. Because apparently, Nova Scotia doesn't have enough people qualified to judge our poultry, so we've imported someone from Virginia 🤷🏻‍♀️

Aaaaaanyway, I’d like to congratulate all participants and may the best bird win! As for the rest of you, don’t let the loss ruffle your feathers. Keep your beaks up, Mother thinks you’re all beautiful.

Love and light!

– Jules
