Good morning, Halifax!
I want to give a warm welcome back to our contributing author, Warren D’Silva!
Warren is an excellent writer and storyteller who has the arts & culture and lifestyle beats covered. I’m mainly a music man who sometimes dabbles in theatre, but when it comes to anything outside of that, I am basically useless. Thankfully, Warren is a jack-of-all-trades, with ins to the fashion industry (he’s a model himself!) and Halifax culture. We’ve got a story from Warren down below that you should absolutely check out.
This leaves me more time to make fun of the provincial government, and sometimes the municipal government—both of which absolutely have it coming considering how much of a mess they’re making.
Speaking of which, I just had a spontaneous new poll idea. I love doing these polls as it gives me a sense of what you, the reader, expect not only from the powers that be, but also our coverage. So, with all the news about provincial budget cuts, let me gauge this one with our audience. Make sure to tell us why you chose what you did!
Do you approve of the provincial budget?
Best,
– B

From Dartmouth rinks to world podiums: Julia Snelgrove’s rise in speed skating

📸 Contributed
The 18-year-old long-track speed skater from Dartmouth says she’s never been someone who sits still for long. On the ice, that restlessness has turned into momentum, and now, medals.
At the most recent international junior competition—the ISU Junior World Speed Skating Championships in Inzell, Germany—Snelgrove won silver in the 500 metres and bronze in the mass start, podium finishes that mark another milestone in a career that has steadily accelerated from local rinks in Dartmouth to the world stage.
“I don’t really like having a lot of free time,” she says in an interview with The Coast. “I’m pretty passionate about what I do.”

👀 In Case You Missed It
🎭 The outcome is clear. The Nova Scotia government's recent budget cuts will impact industries across the province. Cutbacks will have to be made to fit within tight financial margins. Axed grants and funding will be to the detriment of many industries, the arts sector included. It's not just one song communities won't hear," says Masuma Khan, executive director of the Bus Stop Theatre Co-op. "It's communities that won't receive the support and the culture that makes them feel full." The Coast’s Brendyn Creamer speaks with two venue directors about how the budget cuts impact their operations.
🏒 History buffs are rebuking the province’s attempt to enact the Birthplace of Hockey Act, which would designate Windsor, N.S. as the sport’s official place of origin—Mi’kmaq histories tell of a game like hockey well before Windsor’s claim, as well as other places in the province with documented evidence of games akin to hockey before its inception.
🎶 Nova Scotia Music Week will take place in Truro from Nov. 12-15, 2026—the annual celebration of music across the province is in its 29th year and will offer concerts, conference programming, and its awards ceremony.
That’s it!
