🗞️ Singin' the blues

Plus, Halifax Water brings mandatory water-use restrictions, Halifax school teaching democracy early and all the shows happening in December.

Good morning!

In a surprise to nobody, the province was painted blue last night as Tim Houston and his Progressive Conservatives romped their way to re-election—and a supermajority to give them real control of the legislature.

While Nova Scotia is officially blue, the HRM is shining bright orange as the NDP took most of the seats in the urban centre, blowing the Liberals out of the water to become the official opposition.

In light of last night’s results, hot off the presses (and by that I mean my boney fingers), behold the PC Promises BINGO Card:

I encourage you to hold onto it, laminate it, frame it, keep it in your wallet, stick it on your fridge, silkscreen in on a t-shirt, shave it into the side of your cat, whatever you need to do to help keep this government accountable for everything (or even anything) it promised.

Have a great day out there!

– Julie

Student Vote picks new Nova Scotia government

📸 Credit: Halifax Independent School

“Thanks for voting,” says Cohen Francis, acknowledging a Grade 4 student who successfully folded their ballot as they’d been shown and tipped it into the voting box.

Francis is in Grade 9. On Monday, November 25, his class at the Halifax Independent School led the provincial edition of the Student Vote program for their school.

The program uses elections as teachable moments for students under voting age to learn about the roles and responsibilities of governments and elected officials—and the roles and responsibilities of voters. The results from this program are helpful in knowing what the next generation of voters cares about, and how that might differ from their parents and families.

Chantal Baudouin—Les Nœuds de Gustav

Les Nœuds de Gustav is a multidisciplinary work where dance is finely interwoven with music, a narrative and an interactive scenography.

Whether it is a family, a career or a physical heritage, the ambition to build a legacy is above all a human trait. What compels an astronaut to travel into the unknown? Why do we build pyramids, cathedrals, monumental creations beyond the span of a lifetime? Whatever they are, however grand or inconsequent may be their result, ambitions can help define us, unite us and build us.

The solo follows the character Abbacus, who tries to build, rebuild and construct themselves, who explores their ambitions and navigates through doubt and adversity.
