🗞 A weekend of festivals

Plus: This week's harbour report & Kinsella's unexpected exit.

Happy Friday,

It seems like the city is trying to get as much as it can out of the last few weeks (or days) of warm weather. Luckily for us, that means there’s tons to do over the next three days including four different festivals: The Halifax Lebanese Festival, Festa Italiano, LatinFax Festival and the Gottingen Street Festival.

If you want the deets on any of these fests scroll on down.

Have a good weekend!

Julius Caesar meets Van Halen in Halifax Harbour this week—sort of

The 4,260-passenger Norwegian Escape comes into port on Friday as one of the biggest ships to enter Halifax Harbour this week. At a whopping 326 metres long, it’s about the length of three NFL football fields.

The only ship bigger? That’d be the CMA CGM Panama, which can carry up to 15,128 20-foot steel containers—or roughly the equivalent, when laid end-to-end, of the distance from Halifax to Truro. Not too shabby for a ship whose name conjures images of Van Halen’s 1984.

Halifax police chief Dan Kinsella is retiring

📸 Matt Stickland/ The Coast

Halifax Regional Police chief Dan Kinsella is retiring at the age of 57. The move—announced right before Thursday’s Board of Police Commissioners meeting—comes four years into Kinsella’s reign as the city’s top cop, and his last day will be Sept. 15. It's a bit of an unexpected and abrupt exit for Kinsella, but if Chadwick Boseman taught us nothing else, it is likely unwise to speculate on why.
