🗞️ School violence is up and the majority of teachers are at ‘high risk’ of harm

Plus, Everyseeker Festival bringing diverse musical acts to the stage

Oh, hey Halifax,

Construction season is seriously off the chain already and although it’s nice to see ol’ downtown Halifax get herself a facelift, the development is coming at a cost to some local businesses.

Business owners in Halifax are expressing frustrations as a new luxury development is expected to force the relocation—and potential closure—of several Spring Garden Road establishments.

The new building will be home to medical offices, commercial spaces and more than 300 luxury apartments. But it means bad news for some legendary Halifax establishments, like Jean’s Chinese Restaurant—Kong On Jean says he doesn’t have the money to move the business and that nobody will buy it with the risk that it could be demolished.

Don’t worry though, Councillor Waye Mason said he “would be happy” to assist any business in its relocation process, so…that’s…nice?

Have a great day out there!

EDUCATION

School violence is up, reporting is weak, majority of teachers at ‘high risk’ of harm, finds audit

📸 Credit: Lauren Phillips

In the past seven years, schools across the province have reported 60% more violence. That’s  according to the latest from Nova Scotia’s auditor general, Kim Adair, in a report titled Preventing and Addressing Violence in Nova Scotia Public Schools, released Tuesday, June 11.

Of course, people want to know why–what is causing this surge? There are certainly factors the auditor points to, such as increased needs in the classrooms and—as a necessary flipside to that—increased demands on educators within those classrooms without a matched increase in human or other resources to support them.

But first, what can we say for certain is happening in schools right now? How is the department of education, each regional education centre and each individual school across Nova Scotia supporting its students and educators who are experiencing violence in the classroom or shared school spaces? For that, we needed an audit.

ARTS + CULTURE

Everyseeker Festival bringing diverse musical acts to the stage June 13-16

📸 Credit: Everyseeker

Everyseeker has just about everything you could classify as music, and that’s no exaggeration.

Formerly known as the Obey Convention, Everyseeker will see performances throughout Halifax from some of the most creative, genre-bending acts across the country, with half of their lineup being local artists.

There is guaranteed to be something for everyone. Nostalgic for a bygone era? Check out DJ DIAL UP, who fuses disco, ’90s EDM, and Y2K pop into a blend worth bopping to.

Do you like a pinch of science fiction with your tunes? Maybe SlowPitchSound is the right artist for you with his eclectic blend of music he labels as “sci-fi turntablism.”

Looking for death metal inspired in part by tennis matches and graphic novels? Watch Defensive Player perform a 17-minute instrumental where you can attempt to figure out how those inspirations intersect with the band’s music.

Determining whether or not these sounds and ideas work together is half the fun of Everyseeker—discovering and celebrating the artists who deliver music on the fringes of our widely accepted genre canon. Everyseeker is proving that it’s cool to be weird.

The Coast’s Brendyn Creamer spoke to co-directors Carmel Farahbakhsh and Nik Basset on the festival and what it has to offer.
