🗞️ Resilience on the runway
Plus, an out-of-control wildfire in Annapolis County, the province criticized for criminalizing peaceful protest, and climate change is warming the ocean floor.
Hey Halifax 👋
Last weekend, The Magnetic World festival occurred on the hill, bringing out megastars like 21 Savage, Dom Dolla and The Kid Laroi. I’m going to be honest, I only know of 21 Savage, and even then I don’t think I can name a single song from the guy. I just remember the time that he was arrested by ICE in 2019 for having an expired visa.
Regardless of how out of touch I am, some perusing of the local r/halifax subreddit over the weekend led me to reading a few posts from people who attended the concert. Some spoke on it’s quality, others on the age demographics, but one point that was made several times over was the crowd pushing to the front, against the barricade, to the point where Kid Laroi had to tell the audience to move back.
If you’ve ever been to a large concert, you might know how dangerous it can be to get stuck in a crowd of people all moving in one direction—especially if that direction is straight into a wall. If someone trips, they’re at risk of getting trampled. If the crowd pushes up to far, people could suffocate or get crushed against the barricade. Many of us remember the Travis Scott Astroworld tragedy, where a crowd surge ended in the deaths of 10 concert-goers and injured over 300.
Ask any health and safety expert involved in events planning and they will tell you how easy it is for a large crowd to spiral out of control. In many cases, it’s an organizational failure—mind you, I know nothing about the organizers of the festival, and do not want to make any claims that aren’t truthful—but capacity limits exist for a reason, and it shouldn’t be on the artists on stage to manage a crowd that’s potentially putting people in danger. That is part of the organizer’s duty.
I hope everyone who went to the festival had a great time. It sounded like it was an incredible event that brought in a slew of music fans from all genres and put on by folks that just wanted to enhance the cultural fabric of Halifax. I also hope that the organizers are looking at some of the feedback online and are responding to it accordingly for their next festival.
Best,
- B

👀 In Case You Missed It
🥘 There is a long tradition of companies benefiting from travel by giving out culinary awards. It makes sense. How many of us judge our travel experiences by the quality of the food we enjoyed? The Michelin Guide is undoubtedly the world’s most recognized authority on restaurants, with its coveted one-, two- and three-star ratings regarded as globally recognized standards of excellence. Once the bastion of white linen establishments, the list now embraces a broader concept of fine dining. While its focus has widened globally, in Canada, Michelin is limited to Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list, sponsored by San Pellegrino and Acqua Panna, is similarly famous but restricted to a rarified group of restaurants few of us could ever imagine, let alone afford, eating at. Air Canada’s Best New Restaurants awards, by contrast, are uniquely Canadian. They don’t confine themselves to Canada’s big three cities, nor discriminate by province, though there is a tendency to lean urban over rural. Although glitzy city-based restaurants often soak up the glamour, Canada’s food story is written not just in urban towers but also along our rocky coastlines, on the main streets of small towns and through farm-to-table experiences from the farms themselves. The Coast’s food expert Mark DeWolf tells all regarding three great Atlantic Canadian restaurants who have earned Air Canada’s Best New Restaurants award.
🏫 Families in Halifax’s North End are voicing their frustration after years of waiting for an elementary school that has yet to be completed—the school was supposed to open this September after a delay in 2023.
