Good morning!

While I would love to tell you all about my amazing weekend at Halifax Pride’s NS Pride Organizer Summit—thank you to all of the organizers who put that on, it was a lot of fun—we at The Coast are facing an issue I wanted to warn you about.

We’ve gotten reports that some people who definitely aren’t with The Coast are trying to sell Best of Halifax plaques over the phone. This is a heads up to our Best of Halifax winners: we’re in the process of getting plaques ready and we will contact you when we are good to go ahead with them. If it isn’t our pals Marty or Alnoor giving you a call or email to let you know, it may be a scam.

This isn’t the first time someone has tried to capitalize on our Best of Halifax results for their own financial gain. Just be careful if you get a call about plaques that don’t sound right. If you have any concerns, please let us know by sending us an email.

Thanks,

– B

Halifax is falling behind on remote work options

📸 Chris Montgomery/Unsplash

Halifax may have the most remote work opportunities within Atlantic Canada, but it is nowhere near the possibilities offered in other metropolitan areas across Canada.

According to a new study from JobLeads, the online job search platform, 4.6 percent of jobs offer remote work and 9.2 percent offer hybrid work. The total work-from-home flexibility is 13.8 percent. 86.2 percent of jobs require a full-time on-site presence. A total of 3910 active jobs were analyzed.

👀 In Case You Missed It

🗳️ Nova Scotia's 2024 provincial election had the worst voter turnout in its history. With only 45 percent of the voting population casting a ballot, it continued the downward trend of voter turnout in the province. Turnout has been steadily decreasing since the 1990s, with only the 2021 election seeing a positive increase, only for the next election to dip significantly, becoming the first election to have a turnout of less than 50 percent. Part of the problem is the disinterest of younger voters in electoral politics. Elections Nova Scotia data shows only 16.6 percent of voters aged 18 to 24 voted in 2024, and 23.8 percent of people aged 23.8 percent cast a ballot. The highest turnout? Those 75 years or older, at 66.6 percent. The Coast’s Brendyn Creamer discusses why youth may feel disenfranchised when it comes to provincial politics and how political parties can capitalize on this moment to get them involved.

🚨 Daniel Martell, the stepfather of the two missing children from Pictou County, has been charged with sexual assault, assault and forcible confinement Monday—he was arrested on Monday and is due in Pictou provincial court in March.

💸 The Halifax Forum has reached the end of its life, according to Mayor Andy Fillmore, who called the costs for its potential restoration “absurd” as the municipal council attempts to cut costs in order to avoid raising taxes—the price tag of the building is estimated to be around $126 million, according to Fillmore.

That’s it!
