Good morning,

As we’ve has covered at length before, gender-based violence is an epidemic. One incident from last week continued to make this incredibly apparent.

Last Tuesday, a man allegedly walked into a restaurant on Cow Bay Road, masked and armed with a loaded rifle. Police were quick to apprehend the 18-year-old, who is facing more than 50 charges in connection to the incident. The RCMP say the man was in a relationship with one of the restaurant’s employees, determining this to be a potential case of intimate partner violence.

This isn’t the man’s first set of charges related to this victim. He has been previously indicted with assault, assault with a weapon, breaking and entering, and criminal harassment from one incident as well as another assault from a choking, suffocation, or strangling incident in January.

Luck was on the side of everyone but the perpetrator this time around, but this could have turned into a tragedy. More needs to be done to protect victims of intimate partner and gender-based violence. The fact that this guy could even come within vicinity of the restaurant after previous incidents is a poor sign of how our government handles these issues.

However, nothing changes unless we begin instilling different values within men. If we promote anger and hostility, we shouldn’t be surprised when they are violent. Julie had a great story about this last year that's worth a second read.

It takes institutional change and reforms to the justice system for this issue to improve in any meaningful way, but we can’t forget that it also requires a cultural shift.

Best,

– B
