🗞️ Quaking in my boots

Plus, bike lanes back before council this week, province's museums offering free admission for youth and Italy’s culinary philosophy finds a home in Halifax.

Purple Cow Internet

Good morning Halifax,

You know I’m not one to be super alarmist, but I must report that the weather has officially gone crazy and the end days are upon us and if you have a bunker, now is the time to take to it.

First there’s a “heat dome” just sinisterly hanging out over Quebec and Ontario, which is somehow causing wild weather across the rest of the country. So, a heat dome over one area in Canada causes colder temperatures in other parts of the country and I don’t know how or why but that’s what the meteorologist says so it has to be true.

THEN, did you know that there was an actual earthquake off the coast of Nova Scotia Sunday night?! Earthquakes Canada says a magnitude 4.1 earthquake struck about 285 kilometres southeast of Halifax around 9:50pm Sunday.

The agency says the quake had a depth of 10 kilometres, but with the epicentre so far from land, there was no impact reported onshore. This time…

One last note re: horrors in the sea, researchers have discovered an ancient species of predatory fanged fish that used to haunt the coast of Nova Scotia that looked like this and I don’t really know what to do with this visual now being in my brain ⬇️

Good day and good luck,

– Julie

Less is more: Italy’s culinary philosophy finds a home in Halifax

📸 Credit: Submitted

I’ve been to Italy almost too many times to count. Crafting food and wine experiences there is a pleasure—if not a stroke of genius—as every corner of ‘the Boot’ has its own unique and wonderful food culture. It makes tour planning easier there than in most places around the world.

At the root of Italian food culture is the concept of “less is more” and allowing ingredients to shine—a philosophy that has historically been a challenge for North Americans to embrace. Perhaps it’s our “more is more” attitude that pervaded society through the ’80s, ’90s and 2000s.
