🗞️ Put your vote where your mouth is

Plus, Feed NS cancelling traditional Christmas program, province hiring 47 new staff to combat school violence and the Legere brothers taking the Carleton stage.

Hey Halifax,

When I was little, I was obsessed with the story of Little Red Riding Hood. I actually think it ingrained in me some key messages: that the big bad wolf is out there and the world, therefore, is unsafe for little girls.

Back then, nobody told me the truth: that the wolves are actually men and that it was smart to be scared of them. And it’s through that lens that I read the headline “RCMP investigating 'suspicious incidents' of women being followed by men in HRM” and feel…validated. But also frustrated.

The RCMP are asking for the public’s help in identifying a man that has been following women when they got off the bus, sometimes asking for their names, phone numbers and addresses.

I’m so sick of hearing of women in this city having their walks, commutes and travels disrupted like this. If I had a dollar for every time I’ve experienced street harassment, I’d be rolling in British shorthair kittens.

Imagine if all women were compensated for the anguish these encounters cause? We could close the damn economic gender gap. And just think of all the things women could create or change if all their energy wasn’t going into self-preservation.

Until then, let’s just start with equal access to the sidewalk. Can we try to do that?

Have a safe and restful weekend and don’t forget to vote! ☑️

– Julie

HFX VOTES 2024

The future of Halifax depends on you—go vote!

If you are tuned in to municipal politics in any way, you’ll know a lot is riding on this election. Climate change has threatened our homes. Our civic infrastructure needs desperate repairs or to be replaced entirely. We need to address homelessness in a way that works best for those affected.

These issues have no simple answer.

Halifax is a city of numerous interests to consider. Business interests. Real estate interests. The interests of people who worry if they can put food on the table, and those who are worried if the home they’ve lived in for 20 years will survive the next natural disaster. The interests of walkers, cyclists, public transit users, drivers. Homeowners and renters.

Progressives and conservatives. You and me.

When it comes to the big issues, there’s only so much one person can do. It’s for that reason that we collectively choose elected officials to represent us and our values—people who we can trust to argue and vote for our interests.

If you have yet to vote, please check out our Election Hub for everything you need to know about this municipal election. Get to know the candidates in your district. Learn about candidates in other districts so you can talk about them with friends and family. Study up on who you may want for mayor. It’s all here, on one page, for your viewing pleasure.

And if you have a little pessimistic voice constantly nagging in your ear, telling you that everything sucks and will never get better—ignore it! Voting is a very simple action all of us can take in an attempt to improve our chances of weathering the numerous crises we face.

And if you don’t care to vote on your interests, vote for the interests of others. Be a person of the people!

Whatever your reason, and whatever your preferred candidate, please make sure to vote on or before Oct. 19.

A family affair: Brothers Stewart and Mike Legere will split the bill in a “big love in” this weekend

📸 Credit: The Coast

The thing you need to know right off the top is that the Legere family is different.

I’ll never forget the first Christmas I spent with them, which is the core memory my brain always conjures up when I think of them as a family unit.

I arrived a little late, expecting to walk into the normal malay of finger foods and holiday schmoozing. Instead, the whole family—four borderline identical blonde, mostly adult children and their charismatic dad—were gathered around the piano, the oldest son, Stewart, was playing and they were all belting out Meatloaf’s “I would do anything for love” in perfect harmony.

Essentially, the Legere family are the modern day von Trapps, but with wine. So it’s no surprise that now—20 years later—the siblings are still performing together.
