ATLANTIC BOOK AWARDS & FESTIVAL

Good morning Halifax,

First of all, I want to say how humbled, overwhelmed and loved I felt by your outpouring of support. I read and appreciated every single note you sent me and each brought a spark of joy to a pretty bleak time.

Speaking of feeling surprise and joy, a church did a thing to support women one time and I couldn't be feeling more hopeful.

This weekend marked an important step forward as the Anglican Diocese of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island passed a resolution not to misuse non-disclosure agreements. The unanimously passed decision means that NDAs will no longer be used unless requested by a complainant in cases involving sexual harassment, misconduct or abuse, discrimination, retaliation or bullying.

In case you need a refresher on why NDAs suck and contribute to a culture of violence, read this ⬇️

It’s a great start and hopefully will set the tone for other major organizations to follow suit, like you know, our provincial government (as a totally random example 👀)

Have a blessed day 🙏

– Julie

Psych rock band Strange Plants dropping genre-bending debut album

📸 Credit: Submitted

Have you ever tried to listen to Pink Floyd, MGMT, Tears for Fears and Supertramp at the same time? With four varying styles of music blaring in your ears, you may conclude that in this instance—and this instance only—there is such a thing as too much music.

But what if aspects from all of these bands and their respective catalogues were combined with a throughline of passion and purpose? Not just a rip-off of what’s come before, but a celebration of music from days gone by, calling back to the past while firmly cementing itself in the future?

These are the thoughts sparked by listening to Strange Plants, a Halifax-based psych rock band whose debut self-titled album drops on June 6.

⚽ When the Halifax Tides FC played their first match in April 2025, they became the first professional women’s soccer team based in Atlantic Canada. The team began their inaugural season with a 4-1 loss to Calgary Wild FC on April 26, 2025. Since then, they’ve drawn one match and lost three others, scoring just once in five weeks of play.
