The secret to booking travel on a cargo ship? Itās tricky.
šø Martin Bauman/The Coast
This week, like many weeks, Coast reporter Martin Bauman received an email from a lovely reader. Unlike most weeks, this reader wondered how they could book a trip as a passenger aboard a cargo ship. āI want to find out all I can on cargo ship travel out of Halifax,ā they wrote. Had Martin ever looked into it before? No, not really. But it piqued his curiosity.
This weekās harbour report dives into the mystery of hopping aboard a cargo ship in Halifax Harbour. It also detours into a stolen royal heirloom, one of the most famous movie cut scenes of the past quarter-century and Italian opera. Youāve been warned.

Watersheds board pushes back against ādeveloperās languageā
šø Screenshot from Zoom meeting
The Regional Watersheds Advisory Board met on Thursday, Oct. 12, for what was supposed to be a pretty routine meeting. They elected a chair and vice chair. They got a report on last springās edition of Bedford Westās water quality monitoring, although the samples werenāt taken in the spring because of the fires and consultant scheduling constraints.
Despite the timing glitch, things were pretty normal except for some elevated aluminum, which could be caused by how the samples were being taken. The city is still waiting for results from the sample taken next to Highway 102, which should come back soon. The fall samples will be taken next week. One of the committee members gave advice on how to better take samples to avoid the aluminum, and city staff have promised to pass on this information to the contractors doing the work.
After all that, things got a little less routine, as a board member took issue with the way meeting minutes are written.
