🗞️ Nova Scotia Power gets grilled
Plus, Halifax Alehouse bouncer found guilty in death of patron, province approves Halifax bylaw change concerning Dartmouth Cove infilling, and police investigating North End homicide.
Good morning, Halifax!
Everyone’s favourite energy executive Peter Gregg, CEO of Nova Scotia Power, was called to the legislature’s Natural Resources and Economic Development Committee to answer the many swirling questions around the company.
Some had to do with the cyberattack earlier this year, which saw hundreds of thousands of people’s personal information compromised. Others asked about the higher-than-usual bills customers have received since Nova Scotia Power publicly admitted to estimating power usage since the attack.
Gregg said they suspect the cyberattack to have been associated with a “Russia-based threat actor group”, while also apologizing for inflated bills customers have received that are often two-or-three times the usual amount. He also said that those with overestimations will have it “fixed”, which I desperately hope for myself and others means a refund of some kind.
The CEO also mentioned they are in the process of removing social insurance numbers from its system, something the provincial government restricted during its fall legislative session. The utility is also working on fixing the communication system between meters and its billing system. Until then, customers won’t be charged with late fees or interest.
May I remind you that Nova Scotia Power is also looking for another rate increase—partly to pay for maintenance, but also to protect the company’s own financial standing, which isn’t looking too great after the cyberattack.
Even so, it’s a disservice to charge customers more money when you have just lost the information of potentially every customer you service, let alone overcharge people for energy they haven’t used.

The panel has been dubbed the Atlantic Economic Panel, created in response to shifts in global trade—no doubt influenced by the ongoing trade war with the United States. The Coast’s Brendyn Creamer details the announcement while also giving some thoughts on who may benefit from this panel’s future findings.
