🗞️ Good Dear Good
Plus, sentencing set for early in the new year for former IWK CEO, Halifax Water implements mandatory water conservation measures and province announced funding to support women-led businesses.
Hey Halifax,
The temperatures may be dropping, but that isn’t stopping Dal students from rocking bikinis while just strolling around the south end. I saw a flock of half naked teenagers crossing my street yesterday and I was like, “Is it summer again already? How long was I asleep for?”
Come to find out, the students are using the Northwest Arm like it’s Daytona Beach at Spring Break as they lounge on the docks, and enthusiastically—and I’m sure aided by booze—jumping into that gross septic and condom-filled water.
While some are embracing the impromptu party of it all, others are feeling like they are missing out on their university experience—including attending classes to meet like-minded people.
The ongoing labour dispute between Dalhousie University and the Dalhousie Faculty Association (DFA) continues—with bargaining on both Monday and Tuesday not resulting in any agreements. And as of now, there are no more reconciliatory talks on the schedule, leaving most students in limbo.
Some courses, taught by teaching assistants or part-time instructors, who are not part of the faculty union, have been going ahead, but the vast majority of classes are taught by DFA members.
Also a side note: As of July, the maximum salary for a lecturer was $123K and for a professor it was $217K. Just saying, they’re not exactly roughing it (but I’m not taking sides).
According to a press release from the Dal Student Union, each week that classes are cancelled represents about 7% of the semester—as a result, students are holding a rally to ask the university for tuition refunds based on time lost already this year.
What do you think?
Should Dalhousie students be getting a refund for each day the faculty remains locked out? |
Looking forward to reading lots of thoughts on this one.
Love and light!
– Julie

MUSIC
Good Dear Good’s ‘forlorn dance music’ is back with new EP Sook

📸 Credit: Paul Atwood
The phrase ‘opposites attract’ comes to mind when thinking of Good Dear Good, one of the city’s premier indie pop-rock bands.
Their music twists listeners’ expectations, pairing positive, upbeat tunes and honey-sweet harmonies with gloom and doom lyrics. Typically, you would expect songs with lyrics about settling for love despite unideal conditions to be a little on the sadder side, but Good Dear Good would rather dance through the pain. Their upcoming EP, Sook, will continue this trend in earnest.

🗯️ As a province, we know too well the devastating impacts of violence that is ignored, normalized, or excused. The abusive use of NDAs compounds this harm by creating system-induced trauma, institutional betrayal, and a culture that perpetuates gender-based violence. Kristina Fifield—Certified Therapist, and gender-based violence activist—sees first-hand the damage NDAs do to survivors each and every day. Read her open letter to Tim Houston, urging the premier to reconsider his position and take time to critically reflect on the abusive use of Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs) in our province.
