🗞️ Most universities still haven't signed NDA pledge

Plus, heating rebate applications open Oct 1, man wanted in Sobeys robbery and CBC's Murdoch Mysteries coming to Halifax.

Morning Halifax,

Do you ever find yourself writing a text or email, and the only thing that would really help you communicate your thoughts and feelings accurately would be a shovel or a radish? But they don’t exist so you just feel unseen?

Same 😔

But those days are over my friends, because there are eight new emojis coming to your phone and the new content is radish-forward!

In addition to the famously under-represented root vegetable and the aforementioned shovel, you will now find a tired face with bags under its eyes, a harp, a fingerprint, a leafless tree, a purple splatter and—to round out the most random list of things these fingers have ever typed—the flag for a remote island in the English Channel called Stark.

Look, I love my job, okay? But today I learned that there is a non-profit that oversees “global emoji standards” and I’m feeling called in that direction. Applying as we speak…

Have a great day out there!

– Julie

Murdoch Mysteries in Concert is in Halifax this weekend

CBC’s Murdoch Mysteries is as beloved as it is extensive. As the show ramps up for its 18th season, it will also be gracing fans in Halifax with a special evening celebrating the show’s legacy.

Murdoch Mysteries in Concert is being held at the Rebecca Cohn Auditorium on Friday and Saturday Sep. 27 and 28, starting at 7pm. The concert features a look back on the series’ music and how it came to be, with a special screening of the music-centric episode “Murder in the Key of F” including an orchestral backing from Symphony Nova Scotia, conducted by Lucas Waldin.

“The first half of the program is a bit of a tour through a background on the series, a little bit of me dissecting what it is exactly we do when we create music for TV and film,” says the series’ Emmy-nominated longtime composer Robert Carli in an interview with The Coast. “So, we actually play scenes without music, and then we slowly build a cue with an orchestra, which is really exciting.”

Was slavery common across Canada?

DYK: Yes. All the colonies that joined together to form Canada in 1867 had a history of slavery: Upper Canada (Ontario), Lower Canada (Quebec), New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, as well as Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland, who joined Canada later. Challenging universities to stop hiding harassment with NDAs

📸 Credit:

The university pledge is simple enough: “(W)e [our vice-chancellor and higher education provider] commit to not using non-disclosure agreements to silence people who come forward to raise complaints of sexual harassment, discrimination, abuse or misconduct, or other forms of harassment and bullying.” However, only four schools in Canada have signed thus far.

This week, there’s an event that’s working to change that. On Thursday, Sep.26, at 6pm at Dalhousie University’s Schulich School of Law, the Can’t By My Silence organization is holding an open event to discuss the specific harms of NDA misuse on university campuses, and the responsibilities of higher education leaders to end this practice.

👀 In Case You Missed It

🗳️ One of the fastest-growing places in the Halifax Regional Municipality is downtown Dartmouth. The Darkside councillors like to joke that Dartmouth’s unofficial animal should be the crane.
