🗞️ Minority report

Plus, province releases new student code of conduct, former Halifax massage therapist facing additional sexual assault charges and Savour Wine & Food Festival crowns 2025 winners.

Good morning Halifax,

So, the provincial government released its long-awaited updated school conduct policy yesterday. This is super important because the violence in school is—and has been—out of control.

The government says the code focuses on ensuring schools are safe for staff and students—with stronger definitions of unacceptable behaviour and a requirement to support people affected or harmed by violence.

But when I got to the behaviours that now fall under “unacceptable behaviour” I was totally gagged because…how were these not already there?

The following behaviours, I guess, used to be considered totally acceptable but thanks to this brilliant and innovative new code of conduct are now considered UNacceptable: inappropriate language, interruption of the learning environment, physical aggression, threatening behaviour and unapproved mobile device use.

These are now joining the ol’ classic unacceptable behaviours, including physical violence and racist behaviour.

The updated code of conduct follows a scathing report last year from Nova Scotia’s Auditor General, in which Kim Adair blasted the government for failing to ensure training and prevention measures were keeping pace with rising violence in schools.

No wonder kids were just wiling out all damn day! They didn’t KNOW that they couldn’t interrupt class to tell their teacher to fuck off before threatening to slash their tires via text message from a contraband burner phone.

Thank god for the new code of conduct. Does everyone feel safer? I know I do.

Have a great day out there!

– Julie

FEDERAL ELECTION

Final Nova Scotia riding to be counted—Cumberland-Colchester—goes Liberal

The Liberals dominated Nova Scotia in Monday's federal election, taking all but one of the province's 11 seats, sweeping the HRM and toppling two Conservative incumbents along the way.

The last and final riding to be called was Cumberland—Colchester, which needed an additional day as the race was too close to call with special ballots still not counted as of Tuesday morning.

Later Tuesday, however, political newcomer Liberal Alana Hirtle was declared the winner, beating out Conservative incumbent Stephen Ellis.

🗳️ It was a big election night for the federal Liberals in the Halifax area—the party managed to take all five seats in HRM, improving on the 2021 performance in the area in what were largely two-horse races between the Liberals and Conservatives.

👀 In Case You Missed It

👀 We are witnessing a steep escalation in white nationalism in Nova Scotia. Many racialized and marginalized communities will tell you: this hate has never truly gone away. But now we’re seeing something else—something bolder, more organized, and more public. A wave of emboldened fascism and white nationalism is rearing its head in this province. The Coast contributor Liz LeClair shares her deeply personal story of harassment and bullying at the hands of white nationalists and why she cannot—and will not—stay silent.

🗳️ Nova Scotia has 11 federal electoral districts and of those, 9 went Liberal Monday night, 1 went Conservative and one—Cumberland–Colchester—was still up for grabs until it was confirmed Tuesday that it also went Liberal. Here’s how it all broke down as results rolled in by riding.
