Halifax Alehouse bouncers enter pre-trial hearing for assault case

Hey Halifax!

While browsing the web yesterday I discovered that May 3 is actually National Paranormal Day. In honour of the spooky occasion, and because we’ve welcomed so many more subscribers to The Coast community since October, I thought it would be fitting to re-share the Coastbusters ghost-hunting adventures at the Alexander Keith’s Brewery.

Halifax Alehouse bouncers enter pre-trial hearing for assault case

Two Halifax Alehouse security staffers accused of attacking a patron while they were on shift last October are back in provincial court today. Alexander Pishori Levy, 37, and Matthew Brenton Day, 33, will both undergo a pre-trial hearing after pleading not guilty to a pair of assault charges stemming from an incident on Oct. 10, 2022.

Halifax Regional Police told The Coast that officers arrived at the Alehouse that morning shortly after 2:35am, following a call about an “unwanted person” at 5287 Prince Street. When the HRP arrived, police say Alehouse staff were restraining a man on the sidewalk. That man, Alehouse staffers allege, had been damaging property inside the bar. But that story varies significantly from what the man who was being restrained remembers.

MUSIC

What is East Coast music, anyway?

📸 East Coast Music Association

It’s a good time to be a music fan in Halifax: From May 3-7, the 35th annual East Coast Music Awards and festival are setting up shop in the city, delivering a hefty dose of live music from every imaginable stage and showcase around. With everything from Halifax-based reggae to PEI art rock on offer, it’s a vibrant reminder of just how much music is worth listening to in this part of the country (and also doubles as a chance for you to hear it all up close).

At three and a half decades in, it’d be easy to say the ECMAs have never been bigger or more diverse (though that last part isn’t strictly accurate, as it’s worth remembering the many varied and longstanding music traditions in the Maritimes). But, as public perception of the region begins to refocus wider than the fiddle-folk that’s long defined us (wonderful and important as it is), what is modern east coast music?

We asked a bunch of 2023 ECMA artists what music from here means to them. See their replies.
