Introducing Dillon the dragon, Miller Lake’s hottest new resident

PRESENTED BY

Happy Friday Halifax,

The countdown to the long weekend has officially begun! According to this week’s poll, the majority of you plan to spend the extra downtime with family.

I’m in the same boat and will be spending some time with my own family on Monday. We’re all getting together for a backyard barbecue and I can’t wait. In my opinion, warm weather comes along with the best menu–hotdogs, hamburgers, grilled veggies, and ice cream–what more could you ask for?

Not that you can’t consume these meals any other time of year, there’s just something nostalgic about sitting on a camping chair outside with the sun shining, while enjoying a good meal.

What food do you love to eat during the summer?

P.S. While there are plenty of perks to a long weekend, there is one drawback, you won’t be receiving The Coast Daily this coming Monday. We’ll be back in your inbox on Tuesday, May 23!

DRAGON TALES

Introducing Dillon the dragon, Miller Lake’s hottest new resident

📸 Jenn Lee/The Coast

Emily has a new friend … or foe. Or a new lover? Time will tell.

A fierce new face can be seen floating in Miller Lake. This past Saturday, Fall River residents warmly welcomed Dillon, the newest addition to Miller Lake’s dragon family. Dillon joins Emily, the already iconic dragon who has been residing in the lake for decades.

The Coast witnessed the fateful day the pair was released into their natural habitat, just along Highway 102 near the tip of the abandoned Scout camp.

STRIKE

A dispatch from the front lines of the class war: The CUPE strike

📸 Matt Stickland/The Coast

On May 10, a beautiful Wednesday morning, members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees went on strike. The bulk of the striking workers are educational program assistants, but this strike includes all of the support staff for Halifax Regional Centre for Education schools. These EPAs are people—mostly women—who make sure children with disabilities, or children who otherwise need help, get an education in Nova Scotia.

EPAs are on strike for a lot of reasons. But, to hear the governing Tories tell it, the EPAs only had three requests, and the province has met them all.

The Nova Scotia government has either missed the mark or is being deliberately misleading on what the striking workers are asking for. Because, while the government may believe this strike is about geographic parity, the EPAs on the picket line believe it’s about being treated with dignity and respect.
