THIRSTY THIEVES

Can you identify the Boxing Rock beer bandits?

Boxing Rock Brewing Co. taproom manager Linnea Swinimer had just settled in with her morning tea on Wednesday when a text message from her neighbour at the Local Source Market gave her the news: Thieves had broken into their Windsor Street storage locker overnight and made off with a whole lot of beer.

Her first reaction was one of bewilderment. “What the hell?” she says, speaking at the north end taproom with The Coast.

The shock turned into disappointment when the scope of the break-in became clear. All told, the beer bandits took more than $5,000 worth of suds. But for Swinimer, who also lives in the neighbourhood, the brazen break-in struck a personal chord.

Security footage shows three thirsty thieves (or is that Pilsner pilferers? Porter pinchers? Lager lifters?) using two vehicles to load the stolen beer and returning several times between roughly 12:40am and 5am.

THEATRE

Why Wednesday night is special in Dartmouth: A must-see play makes its east coast debut

Jivesh Parasram grew up in Dartmouth, where his white neighbours assumed he was Black—and his Black neighbours assumed he was Arab-Canadian. (Both camps struck out: He has Indian and Trinidadian roots.)

Parasram—a noted playwright and actor now based in Vancouver—turned this childhood rife with copy into a one-person play: Take d Milk, Nah?, a piece of theatre that’s wowed audiences and critics across the country, pulling rave reviews from NOW Magazine and The Globe and Mail.

Now, Parasram is finally bringing his story back to the place that inspired it as Take d Milk, Nah? starts a tour of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick by making its east coast debut at Alderney Landing Theatre on March 29.

They will champion community vibrancy and inclusion while engaging young citizens in shaping the region in creative ways. The program was developed alongside Halifax’s current Poet Laureate, Sue Goyette, and our partners at the Nova Scotia Writers’ Federation and AfterWords Festival.
