Good morning, Halifax.
According to police in Bridgewater, a youth has been arrested for planning a simultaneous attack on their local school with a youth from Manitoba. The attacks were being planned against Park View Education Centre and Rivers Collegiate.
Alerted by Interpol and the FBI, the Bridgewater teen was arrested with police finding plans, imitation weapons, including an imitation pipe bomb and assault rifle. The Manitoba youth was also arrested. They had apparently been communicating through a mix of open chatting and private messages online.
This is incredibly scary news, especially after the shock of the Tumbler Ridge shooting last month. In a province still reeling from the 2020 mass casualty, the thought of another horrific attack is almost too terrifying to acknowledge. Yet, we must.
Please take care of yourself today.

Following a culinary dream with a pinch of Saffron & Salt
📸 Contributed
For many people who love food and hospitality, the dream of one day opening a space dedicated to cooking, sharing knowledge, and celebrating great ingredients quietly lingers in the background. For Nicola Gillis, that dream eventually took shape in Halifax with the opening of Saffron & Salt, a thoughtfully curated cook shop and cooking class venue located at The Richmond Yards on the corner of Clifton and Almon Streets. The ‘Yards’ is quietly creating a culinary oasis in Halifax’s North End, as Saffron & Salt neighbours include a fine food emporium, a cake shop and will soon welcome a new Italian café and eatery.

👀 In Case You Missed It
🎭 The high seas are often portrayed as a gate towards freedom. A place where land borders and political lines disappear into a breadth of rolling waves, where the only people you have are the ones you've brought aboard.Halifax playwright Karen Bassett originally wrote Heroine to portray strong women in the pirate-polluted oceans of the 18th-century Bahamas. Now, many years later, Theatre New Brunswick is bringing the story of history's most famous femme pirates, Mary Read and Anne Bonney, to the Bus Stop Theatre this week. The Coast’s Brendyn Creamer speaks with MacLellan about Heroine and how it seeks to empower women through sword-fighting spectacle.
⚖️ Federal justice minister and Nova Scotian MP Sean Fraser commented on the acquittal of a Halifax man who used AI to create nude deepfakes of women he knew, saying it was “heinous behaviour”— Frasier introduced the Protecting Victims Act in the house in December, which he hopes will close loopholes around the creation of AI deepfakes.
🚗 Firefighters in River John were left with a strange predicament when a car was left unoccupied three kilometres from the shore of the Northumberland Straight—it took a helicopter and snowmobiles to have the vehicle safely removed.
