There’s a tradition in Tokyo of coffee and teahouses entirely devoted to the listening of jazz music. Wander through Kyoto, and you’ll find jazz kissaten (jazz cafés) brimming with vinyl, where Miles Davis and John Coltrane solos float over the sound of coffee pouring and tea kettles brewing.

Stillwell’s newest taproom venture (3670 Kempt Road) is a little like that—only perhaps with a little more oomph in the sound system. Opened Saturday, the brewery, hi-fi and retail store—described by co-owner and brewer Chris Reynolds as a “listening bar”—is built off a simple premise: What if a brewery was made for music lovers?

VISUAL ART

Mothering is work, yes. But this new exhibit proves it is art, too.

📸 The Sense Archive

Anyone who has spent time mothering knows that it is undoubtedly and irrevocably work. But could it also be an art? Jessica Winton and Sally Morgan certainly think so: Along with fellow artist Ruth Douthwright, they’ve formed The Sense Archive, which is currently showing the exhibition This Body of Work through a partnership between Eyelevel Gallery and Mayworks Festival, on view at the Saint Mary’s University Art Gallery until June 18.
