HALIFAX JAZZ FESTIVAL

Good morning!

For 29 years The Coast's Best of Halifax Readers' Choice Awards have celebrated Halifax's triumphs, and supported the city through disaster—hurricanes, the pandemic and now, fire. With the wildfires threatening Halifax finally under control, we thought you might welcome a reason to think about something happy instead, so we invite you to join the 2023 Best of Halifax nominations.

Taking part is easy! Head to BestofHalifax.com and tell us the names of your favourite people, places, and businesses—in dozens of categories from Best Restaurant to Best DJ, Best Gym to Best Tattoo Artist. Think about the things that make the city great for you!

The nomination period will end on July 13 and the top six most-nominated names in each category, along with the category's gold winner from 2022, move on to the final vote. That BOH vote happens from August 3 to September 10, with the gold, silver and bronze winners announced in November on thecoast.ca and right here in The Coast Daily newsletter.

Happy nominating!

THE GRAND PARADE

How the HRM could have avoided the worst of the Tantallon fire

📸 Communications Nova Scotia

In this episode of The Grand Parade podcast, Coast reporters Matt Stickland and Martin Bauman reflect on the harsh lessons learned from the Tantallon wildfire—including how the HRM was warned about the risks of a scenario like this 20 years ago.

Matt educates Martin on as-of-right development, and how it enabled the suburbs around Halifax to grow with little oversight for disaster preparedness. The two discuss the ramifications of Northern Pulp’s closure on the province’s forests and the aftermath of Hurricane Fiona, as well as what the events of last week bode for the HRM’s future—and how to find hope and agency amid the spectre of industry-fuelled climate change.
