HAPPY BIRTHDAY

The Coast’s 30th anniversary

It was 30 years ago tomorrow—June 17, 1993—that The Coast made Its public debut. Yes, this was long before the internet became the internet. The Coast launched as a free newspaper that came out every two weeks, distributed in places like bars and restaurants, libraries, record stores and video rental (!) shops. We believed Halifax deserved a locally obsessed alternative to the traditional media, particularly Halifax’s two (!!) daily newspapers. Now It's The Coast that comes out daily via this newsletter, delivered straight to your screen of choice. And we even offer paid memberships to people who can financially support our mission of serving Halifax.

Thirty years ago was before Google and Facebook, iPhones and TikTok, COVID and AI. It was before lots of current Coast readers were born! But at the same time, we routinely hear from readers who've been there since the beginning, just like co-founders Christine Oreskovich and Kyle Shaw, who are still today’s Coast publisher and editor, respectively. All told, 30 years might be the perfect amount of history, a solid base of experience to build an even better future on. And it’s certainly enough to make a birthday request on—and that request is we want to hear from you.

Whether your Coast history goes back three decades or three weeks, please reply to this email and let us know what The Coast means to you. If you don’t have Coast history yet? Keep reading, keep interacting, and watch for our events like Burger Bash and Oysterfest. Hopefully it won’t take 30 more years for us to become a part of your Halifax life.

Visual Arts Nova Scotia announces new Executive Director

📸 Submitted

Visual Arts Nova Scotia—a by-artists, for-artists organization that supports and spotlights visual art in the province—announced a new executive director today. Therese Cruz, based in Shelburne, has a background in jewellery design and passion for painting and rug-hooking. In a press release announcing Cruz's taking the role, VANS says she is motivated "to be in arts administration that creates multiple avenues for local artists to gain exposure and be able to advocate and promote on their behalf."

It’s the latest example of shake-ups in the arts sector, which has seen most of the city’s major organizations gain new leadership during the pandemic.
