Halifax Pride announces festival and parade dates

And the radical self-empowerment of Shania Twain.

Happy Monday Halifax!

It’s going to be beautiful in the city today. The temperature is going to hit 27C so make sure to break out that SPF and stay cool. It was recently planting day on Quinpool Road so it could be the perfect opportunity to take advantage of the weather and stroll down Quinpool to check out the new blooms!

Speaking of gardening, Halifax Seed recommends waiting until the first full moon in June to start your garden, which recently passed on the 3rd. Have you begun planting yet?

FESTIVALS

Halifax Pride announces festival and parade dates

Is there even a Pride this year? For a while, it was murky: A publicly messy collection of Instagram posts that ran on Halifax Pride’s profile in early January gave an air of chaos, while the comment sections (when they were open) became a hotbed of allegations of volunteer mistreatment and vague calls from individuals demanding accountability and transparency.

The board changed. And changed again. There were public meetings—the latest on June 2—but many community members who tried to attend them were never sent the Zoom link (myself included). The whispers continued, with people now asking rhetorically if the festival would be a go this July, already assuming from the rumour mill that it wouldn’t or couldn’t be.

Hope and Healing Canada

#HopeandHealingCanada, a live installation by Métis artist Tracey-Mae Chambers, is at the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21

The Museum is currently hosting Hamilton-based Métis installation artist Tracey-Mae Chambers and her exhibition #HopeandHealingCanada.

Chambers creates her live installations by stitching together intricate and complex designs with thousands of meters of red yarn, and the goal of starting a conversation about decolonization. The red yarn is reused at subsequent installation locations to act as a way of creating a visual and tangible image of connectivity. As her work makes its way across the country, each installation looks different depending on where it’s hosted, but the message of hope and healing remains the same.

Chambers' artwork will be on display at the Museum until August 29 and will then continue to tour throughout Canada.

The radical self-empowerment of Shania Twain

📸 Via Shania Twain Facebook

The skin was important. A diagonal line from collarbone to thigh. And to be braless underneath an open, semi-sheer black shirt. Then, the posture: confident, at ease. It’s symbolic, all of it. She wanted a visual that was self-empowering, something that depicted the vulnerability, the responsibility, the very statement of being comfortable in your own skin. After all: that’s what this was about.
