What’s up with all the summer rain in Halifax’s forecast?

Good morning!

It’s now or never: Best of Halifax 2023 nominations are closing in a week on July 13. We need your input on who, what and where makes Halifax so great. You can nominate your bus driver and your waiter, your favourite restaurant and your gym, you can even nominate your friends, your colleagues or yourself.

After The Coast tabulates all the nominations, the top six most-nominated names in each category, along with the category's gold winner from 2022, move on to the final vote. That BOH vote happens from August 3 to September 10, with the gold, silver and bronze winners announced in November on The Coast and right here in the newsletter!

DRY JULY? NOT YET.

What’s up with all the summer rain in Halifax’s forecast?

It hasn’t been a summer for hanging clothes out to dry. According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, Halifax Stanfield International Airport saw 20 days with at least some amount of rainfall in June. That’s second only to famously icy January (26 days of rain and snow) for precipitation in the past 12 months, and nearly the same amount of drizzly days that June and July combined for (21) in 2022.

All of those showers have added up: Halifax received 213.7 millimetres of rain in June, more than double the month’s average of 96.2 mm. And July hasn’t been much drier—in the first four days alone, Halifax has seen nearly half (43.3 mm) of the monthly rainfall average (95.5 mm) for this time of year.

So what gives? And when will summer arrive for good? Coast reporter Martin Bauman went in search of the answer.

MUSIC

This Halifax band almost broke up due to burnout. Instead, they’re launching a triumphant comeback this Saturday at The Marquee.

If Justin Murphy—front person of Halifax indie rock band Walrus—feels a bit reverent when he takes The Marquee stage this July 8, it’ll be hard to blame him. Someone a bit more prone to cheesiness might even pinch themselves (though that feels out-of-character for Murphy’s brand of north end irony). See, it isn’t just the band’s first hometown gig in four years. It’s a fact that the plastered-about-town show posters hint at in calling the event “the unexpected return to live performance from Walrus”: Not mere marketing, this is a show that almost didn’t happen at all.

“It’s weird to put into words. It was almost like I was hurt by the idea of music; scarred by it, in a weird way,” Murphy begins, speaking with The Coast by phone weeks before the upcoming show. “It was strange, mentally, for a while: I would listen to all the stuff I love and I couldn’t get into anything.” It’s a textbook description of chronic burnout. It’s also the reality for many mid-level musicians today.

Luckily, Murphy managed to reconnect with his art—and now Walrus fans can, too, as the show that almost didn’t happen takes place on July 8.
