Hey Halifax!

The Province has announced it plans to conduct a study to find out whether it’s worth keeping the ferry service between Nova Scotia and Maine going after its current contract ends in 2025. What do you think?

About those billionaire megayachts in Halifax Harbour this week…

📸 Martin Bauman/ The Coast

They’re impossible to miss if you’ve found yourself on Halifax’s waterfront in the past week: A trio of superyachts with a combined worth of about US $128 million. No, that’s not a typo.

The Silver Shalis (owned by New York multibillionaire Larry Silverstein, and complete with its own lap pool, elevator and gym), Homecoming and Vive la Vie (owned by Swiss pharma billionaire Willy Michel) are the latest megayachts to pay a visit to Halifax Harbour.

But have you ever wondered just how much it costs to keep a superyacht seaworthy? (It might shock you.) Coast reporter Martin Bauman has the answer in this week’s harbour roundup—along with the latest naval ships, container ships and cruise ships to come in and out of port.

Attend one, or both, of the two different programs that are running. They include two different performances by Olivier Coëffard (Europe), formerly with Nederlands Dans Theater and the return of the zany, and spectacular Rock Bottom Movement with a world premiere. FOOD

Caribbean Bliss offers great eggs Benedict and inspo for city planning

The best way to judge a breakfast place is to order the eggs benedict, because there are only two correct ways to make the dish.

The first correct way to cook an eggs benedict can only be found in greasy spoon diners. Greasy spoon Hollandaise sauces are usually made by adding water to some powdered sauce mix. These powder-based sauces are consistently good—and how could they not be? North American food eaters have been trained to appreciate the uniform consistency and flavour profiles that come with our highly processed and manufactured diet.

It’s hard sometimes to remember that there is a better way to eat eggs benedict: When it’s made from scratch from fresh ingredients by a French-trained chef—a chef like Elias Fathallah at Caribbean Bliss in Halifax’s north end.
