Plus, Halifax man sentenced to life for 2021 murder, Oakfield Park beach reopens after algae warning and local artists get a shot at opening for Kid LAROI or Dom Dolla.
Hello Halifax, Warren here today.
Isn’t it funny how people suddenly become superfans the minute someone passes away? This week, social media lit up with tributes for Ozzy Osbourne, most of them heartfelt, yes, but a few left me scratching my head. You know the type: folks who couldn’t name a single Black Sabbath song last week, now posting paragraphs like they toured with him in ‘78. Give people their flowers while they’re still here, not just when there’s clout to chase and hashtags to hop on.
Speaking of clout, I took a break from all that noise and went trout fishing with a few friends. The Eastern Shore, especially around DesBarres Manor, is an underrated gem. Nova Scotia’s rivers and lakes are teeming with trout and salmon from spring to fall, it’s peace, patience, and the occasional splash that reminds you life happens outside of a screen.
But before fall has us layering up, cooped indoors once again watching the world through screens, Halifax Fashion Week is bringing the heat from August 10 to 17. I’m currently working on a story spotlighting local models who balance catwalk dreams with 9-to-5 jobs that might surprise you.
Know someone who fits the bill? Send their name my way, I just might feature them.
You know you love me.
XOXO,Warren

Hockey culture in this country is steeped in misogyny and rape culture: An open letter to my sons about consent

📸 Credit: Unsplash
For any readers who don’t live in Canada, you may not be aware of the recent ruling in the Hockey Canada scandal and the subsequent trial. I can’t bring myself to regurgitate it word-for-word so you can read about it here, here, and here.
The gist is this: five professional hockey players were found not guilty of sexually assaulting a young woman in a hotel room.
Today, I’m sharing an open letter with you, written to my sons—a testimony of what’s in my heart. What I have shared with the boys. What I am hoping for the world. This is a letter from my heart. I hope it helps someone else begin a conversation with their sons about the importance of consent.
