Oh hi there!

Alright, I’ll say it: May has been a cruel mistress, with her sunny good looks, but icy personality. She has fooled me into jean shorts one too many times with her witchy whiles.

May has also been particularly crappy for me because I had to face two heart-breaking milestones.

On May 6, we—”celebrated” seems like the wrong word here, so I’ll say “observed”—the one year anniversary of my husband’s death. It has been a tricky year because my recovery has been so very non-linear. Some days I feel a semblance of OK-ness, and then I’m hit with a wave of grief that is debilitating.

That said, I’m doing it and the baby is thriving (and yelling and grabbing and wiggling).

May also brought with it my first Mother’s Day as a mum, but also my first Mother’s Day without a mum. That duality was hard to take because, well, I just wanted my mum really badly.

But this isn't about me and my misery (mostly).

In truly amazing news, thanks to YOU, my Coast army, I won my group in the SUPER MOM competition and have officially moved onto the quarter-finals—putting me in the top 1% of anything I’ve ever done ever. Thank you so much for your support, you guys are truly the best.

But now is when the rubber hits the road (as my Boomer dad would say). All votes so far have now been thrown out, so we’re starting from scratch and I'm currently in 7th place, which, ewww. That means I need you to get click, click, clicking for your favourite (sorry Brendyn, but let’s be real) Editor.

You can vote everyday for free, but if you have a few bucks laying around, you can pay for more votes and all proceeds go to The Children’s Miracle Network. One of the prizes is an article in a magazine where I would get the opportunity to shine the light on complex grief, how it changes you, and parenting through it.

And if you aren’t convinced, here is some adorable footage of Poppy and I to sway your cold, dead heart.

Pretending Gets Exhausting

Ever notice how exhausted you feel after pretending you’re “fine” all day? People can carry stress quietly while still showing up for work, family, and everyone else. Counselling creates space to stop performing and start processing. The strongest thing you can do is say out loud what’s been sitting heavy.

👀 In Case You Missed It

💙 On Saturday, I sat in a circle. Not a committee. Not a task force. Not a working group with terms of reference and a mandate to report back to a Minister. A simple circle. Seating was arranged so that no one sat at the head or the back, and everyone was equal. That arrangement was not incidental. It was the point. Contributor Liz LeClair shares her experience within a community sharing circle and the strength found in others during difficult times.

🎒 New information about the province’s educations cuts shows they will be making the following changes: 77.5 redeployments, 47 vacancy eliminations, 13.5 layoffs, 5.6 short-term contracts coming to an end and three vanacies being removed for one year—education minister Brendan Maguire says Teacher’s Union members aren’t losing jobs but will instead return full-time to the classroom rather than specializing in distinct subjects.

🥤 Halifax police put out a warning over the weekend regarding drink tampering—this comes during investigations into separate incidents where two women potentially had their drinks tampered, with police warning not to leave any drinks unattended.

That’s it!
