🗞️ Have a brew-tiful weekend

Plus, bomb scare in universities, Halifax hate crimes on a rise, Canada Post makes new offers to union.

Hey there Halifax,

We’ve made it to Friday — and if you're anything like me, you're ready to shake off the workweek and soak up some local vibes. Whether you're in the mood for fresh produce or fresh perspectives, this weekend is the perfect time to explore what our community has to offer.

Start your Saturday with a stroll through your neighborhood farmers' market — load up on local veggies, handmade goodies, and maybe even catch some live music while you're at it. After that, why not wander into a gallery or two? From emerging artists to established local talent, there's always something new (and inspiring) on the walls.

Support local, slow down, and take it all in. You’ve earned it.

Until next week!

XOXO
Warren

Food

Five independent cafés to support this weekend

📸 Operating since 1938, Java Blend is one of Halifax’s oldest and most respected names in coffee.

Halifax has long had a love affair with coffee. As a port city with deep maritime roots and a growing population of students, creatives, and remote workers, it’s no surprise the café culture here runs strong.

Whether it’s a morning ritual before heading to campus, a post-lunch meeting spot, or a cozy refuge on a rainy afternoon, coffee shops in Halifax serve as more than just places to caffeinate—they’re essential third spaces in a city that values connection, creativity, and comfort. While big-name chains like Starbucks and Tim Hortons are never far away, Halifax’s independent cafés are quietly thriving.

🗞️ In Other News

🦝 We’ve all heard of firefighters rescuing cats in trees but what about baby raccoons left in a parking lot? That’s exactly what a Dartmouth fire station faced when they came upon not one but two orphaned kits shivering in the cold.

🐟 The RCMP says it is investigating reports that an alleged assault on fishers in Eastern Passage was a hate crime.

🧯 A home in a Dartmouth neighbourhood was damaged by fire on May 21. The union that represents firefighters in the city says crews were called to an address on Stuart Harris Drive in the Woodlawn community. They arrived just before 5 p.m. after a report of a fire.

🔎 More details are emerging about the chaotic scene in a downtown Halifax bar the night Dartmouth battle rapper Pat Stay was fatally stabbed.

👀 In Case You Missed It

🎤 There’s no shortage of singer-songwriters who can strum a few chords and croon over the hum of a bar crowd. But Alexander Gallant brings something different to the table. His songs blend dry wit with raw honesty, pulling stories from the bottom of a glass and holding them up to the light—sometimes with a grin, sometimes with a grimace.

Based in Dartmouth, Gallant first made waves with his 2023 debut Waiting Table Blues, a stripped-down, emotionally rich record that put him on the local radar. Now, he's gearing up to release his second album, Rubber Monster Suit, on May 25. It's a project that digs even deeper, wrapping vulnerability in sardonic charm and just enough chaos to keep things interesting.
