🗞️ The who's who of new artists

Plus, police release more details in Wal-Mart death, Barrington traffic to get worse before it gets better and SMU report finds systemic racism.

Hey Halifax,

Let’s have some Oprah real talk about one of the more perplexing of man-made creations—and I’m not talking about Crystal Pepsi, although that was a doozie. I’m referring, of course, to daylight saving time.

I feel like I have daylight saving amnesia because I never remember it’s going to happen until it’s abruptly happening and then I resent it very much (not unlike my period, tbh).

As I’m sure you know, in the spring, most of Canada turns the clock back an hour to allow for more evening daylight. This is reversed in the fall to allow for more morning daylight. The first iteration of the practice dates back to about two years into the First World War in Germany, as a way of encouraging people to use less energy to light up their homes and reserve important resources for the war effort.

But here we are 100 years later, getting ready to fall back in a couple weekends. And while some experts say more daylight in the morning is undeniably good for us, it also messes with our sleep, makes our kids freak out because they’re off schedule and forces workers to commute in the dark.

So is it worth it? You tell us!

Should we keep the switch or totally ditch?

Have a great day out there!

BEST OF HALIFAX

These are the best new musical artists in Halifax

Music is sharing a part of yourself with the rest of the world.

Whether in performance or through a recording, songs are meant to connect with people on some level. It might be through a vibe, such as enjoyment, or it could be through a deeper emotion like nostalgia or melancholy.

The act of making that connection takes willpower and perseverance, especially today when posting any shred of yourself online could lead to hurt. It takes a special type of person to endure the anxieties that come with sharing art, and the new musical artists that are coming out of Halifax are certainly special.

In our series of lists detailing The Coast’s Best of Halifax Readers’ Choice Awards nominees, we have our Best New Artist / Band category—seven incredibly talented musicians or musical groups that have begun to make a name for themselves through their art.

“Do you feel a sense of belonging as a Black student at SMU? Do you feel valued?”

The Black Inclusion Strategy Working Group at Saint Mary’s University asked Black students, staff and faculty these and other questions while compiling the first-ever study on the barriers faced by SMU’s Black community and their experiences of racial discrimination in their academic and working lives at SMU.

After two years of research and analysis, the BISWG published the report “Understanding the Challenges of the Black Community at Saint Mary’s University” on Wednesday, Oct. 9 in a press release. It found evidence of “systemic racism and failed commitments to [the] Black community at SMU,” says the release, including commitments made to students, faculty and staff.
