Plus, Halifax Water asking some residents to reduce water use, province approves RV Park as housing alternative and your district 15 voting guide.
Happy Monday Halifax,
When I was a drinking woman (5 years sober today, btw!), I would often refer to Monday as āblack Mondayā because of the sinking, bleak feeling that would accompany a particularly thirsty weekend. I deeply feel for any of you who are experiencing that existential dread this morning and send you love and light.
But you know who is probably not feeling that way? Young people. According to a survey by Stats Can on recent alcohol consumption, younger Canadians are more likely to have not had a drink in the past weekāthe younger age group had less high-risk drinking too.
But more and more people of all age groups are assessing their relationship with boozeāand what life might look like without it. For those interested in slowing or stopping their alcohol consumption, there's a phrase: "sober curious."
Lindsay Sutherland Boal is the founder of She Walks Canadaāa group dedicated to helping women overcome their struggles with alcoholāand she says that āsober curiosityā is a process that is essential to overcome over-drinking.
If you are sober curious, talk to someone about it! And here is a list of resources to help get you started.
Have a great day!
ā Julie

ARTS + CULTURE
These are the best music videos of 2024 according to Halifax

The Best Of Halifax voting is now in full swing, and as the votes come pouring in for Halifaxās favourite restaurants, artists, performers and more, we wanted to break down a few categories to help you decide who youāll vote for.
The first of these is the music video category. Writing, performing and producing music is already a strenuous process. Itās difficult for artists not to be perfectionists about their sound, so it can often take months, even years, for a song to truly come together into a final product that the artist can be proud of.
Adding a video to go with that song can be even more of a challenge. Depicting a song's story, message or vibe into a visual format takes more than determination. It often requires a crew of people knowledgeable in video capture, cinematography and editing, and depending on the videoās concept and execution, it can quickly become an expensive endeavour.
And while the MTV era has been over for quite some time, we still appreciate music videos for the artistry on display. They can push singles to gain more traction. They can enhance storytelling and meaning. They can be fun and goofy, or reflective and sombre.

District 15 used to be the only district in the HRM made up entirely of one community, Lower Sackville. With the recent district boundary changes, District 15 picked up the Beaverbank and Kinsac communities from the neighbouring District 14.
In order to determine which candidate will be the best to lead this community on their path to another successful 250 years, The Coast sent out a substantial questionnaire to see what each candidate knows about the issues facing the city ahead of the municipal election on Oct. 19. The Coast followed up with more detailed questions to test each candidate's policy chops.
