🗞️ Halifax goes Hollywood
Plus, apartment fire in Middle Sackville extinguished but building heavily damaged, police say “hatred will not be tolerated” after six incidents of racist graffiti and Halifax infirmary is no place for mice.
Good morning Halifax,
Yay! I have something good to report about an issue that is close to my heart and health. Like many Nova Scotians, I spent a large chunk of my life struggling with an eating disorder. It was my worst “best kept secret”.
As a family, we searched for help all over the province—an extensive and expensive process. But recovery from an ED is not a linear process and there remains a stigma around the extremely common illness. It’s also a very secretive one with so many layers, so it’s hard to know where to even start when you’re ready to break free.
This week, Eating Disorders Nova Scotia (EDNS) kicked off renovations on its first-ever dedicated space. Located at 2711 Agricola Street—the new hub will serve as a support and resource centre for those impacted by eating disorders.
The number of Nova Scotians who are living with or are at risk of developing an eating disorder is staggering, and the pandemic made things much worse. Plus, most of the programs EDNS currently offers are online, so the new physical space will allow the organization to expand its services and bring people together.
I know for me, my ED got so much worse in times of isolation; it thrived in the shadows and convinced me that my secrets were only safe with it. It told me that the two if us are in it together and that nobody else could possibly understand.
Eating disorders are lying a-holes.
The truth is that real healing happens out in the open—in community. The more you talk about it, the less power it can wield. That’s why I’m thrilled to hear about this fantastic project.
If you are reading this and are struggling or feeling alone, please know that there is no shame in what you’re going through and, in fact, eating disorders are among the most common mental illnesses—impacting one in 10 Canadians.
You are not alone and believe me when I say, if I can get to other side—with a hugely pregnant, constantly changing body that I love and am in awe of—you can recover and have freedom over your life and body too. And that’s on period!
Extra love and light today!
– Julie

Halifax mother-daughter duo shine a Nova Scotian light at the Emmys

📸 Credit: Submitted
When the Emmy Awards happened Sunday night, it wasn’t just gowns, tuxes and trophies in the spotlight. This year, among the glitz and glamour included something more Haligonian: the signature lighthouse of Nova Scotian Nautique Clothing, sailing east from Halifax onto the red carpet.
Jenna and Julia Ross are a mother-and-daughter team from Halifax whose fashion and food ventures intertwine. They are the founders of Nova Scotian Nautique Clothing, a line that draws from Atlantic winds, rugged beauty and the stoic symbolism of the lighthouse.
At this year’s Emmy Awards gifting suite in Los Angeles, they included a navy ball cap embroidered with the Nautique lighthouse logo paired with a box of Nova Scotian Cookie Co. shortbread.

👀 In Case You Missed It
🍫 When Inge Kiss and her husband, Marshall Parker, boarded a flight to Croatia a decade ago, they had no idea the trip would reshape their lives. At the time, both were busy professionals in Boston: Inge working as chief sales officer for a French engineering consultancy covering North America and Asia-Pacific, and Marshall as financial controller for a British firm. Their careers were secure, the city familiar. But both were restless. “I was looking for a small business opportunity,” Inge recalls. “I didn’t know what I wanted to do, but I knew I wanted something different.” The spark arrived in the form of chocolate. The Coast’s resident food expert Mark DeWold spoke with Kiss and Parker about how they turned passion into produce.
That’s it!
