Plus, tax notices and healthcare appointments impacted by Canada Post, the provincial government tries to end fall session early, and the Lake George wildfire is still out of control.
Hi Halifax 👋
I find it difficult to not over-stress about the state of the world, and I highly doubt I’m alone in these feelings. So, instead of the usual ramblings, I wanted to lighten the mood ahead of the weekend with some music recommendations. Halifax, and Nova Scotia generally, is a bastion of music with so many talented locals ready to become your new favourite artist. I’ve also written about several of these folks before, so I’ll link articles with each description if they’re available.
With a brand new EP just released, Good Dear Good delivers indie pop-rock bliss with a dash of doom. Lyrically, they touch on arrays of anxiety, but the music will make you want to shed those feelings to get up and dance. My personal favourite is from their new project, Sook, titled “Each Other’s Best”.
I’ve had the pleasure of seeing both of these next acts live. Verry Gerry delivered one of my all-time favourite albums earlier this year in Sunny Beaches, a brilliant journey of sunshine that takes a couple dark twists along the way. It’s indie rock through and through, with a few poppy hooks and some psych aspects. I love every song on the project, but if I had to pick one, it’d be “The Face You Try to Hide”.
Finally, I’ll mention Customer Service, who I first caught opening for NOBRO during last year’s Halifax Urban Folk Festival. I have a soft spot for emo, and Customer Service brings the emotions while also asking you to push through it by screaming their lyrics back to them. Their newest project comes out on Oct. 31, and the single they released in anticipation, “Never Meant To”, feels like a celebration of the band, as well as the genre they occupy.
Have a rockin’ weekend folks! 🎸
Best,
- B
