🗞️ Gig for Gaza raising awareness and funds for Palestinian charities

Plus, HRM messes up paperwork, bullies old man

Another week in the books Halifax!

There are few things I enjoy more on the weekend than cruising Halifax’s consignment and thrift shops. And It seems like I’m not the only one that loves poppin’ tags (and doesn’t love feeding the fast fashion machine).

The Halifax thrift shop scene is becoming more crowded. The market is growing and according to Charlotte Genge—an expert and consultant in reusable fashion and clothing—that’s because more consumers are eco-conscious. In the thrift business, what's old is new again, and buying second-hand means garments are staying out of landfills and getting more use.

So it’s not just about the thrill of the chase anymore, but it still does feel hella good to find a unique gem that has a story. I always feel like the clothes I thrift have seen some…stuff. 👗 👀

Have a safe and restful weekend!

– Julie

The organizers of Gig for Gaza have found a way.

On June 20 at the Marquee Ballroom, a concert will be held featuring several well-known Nova Scotian artists, all to raise money for relief efforts in Palestine through the Palestine Red Crescent Society and the Atlantic Canada Palestinian Society.

Included in the lineup are singer-songwriters Jenn Grant, Mo Kenney, and Ria Mae, hip-hop artists Shanii and Basyl, reggae artist Jah’Mila, and folk duo Mama’s Broke. Special guests include El Jones, Killa Atencio, and co-organizer Rana Zaman.

Jenn Grant has also come on as one of the organizers alongside Zaman. She felt driven to contribute to the ongoing rallies for a ceasefire after witnessing photos and videos from Gaza on social media.

“I found it very horrific and stress-inducing, and also find it really beautiful the connections that I've made amongst the community who are dedicated to supporting the community of Palestinians, and the freedom and rights of all humans—especially Palestinians right now.”

The Coast’s Brendyn Creamer spoke to Zaman and Grant about the Gig for Gaza and how it came to be.

In a part of Dartmouth that will soon be known as Port Wallace there’s a guy who runs a construction company that was founded by his father in the 1970s and when his father died the son continued on with his father’s business. The son is now a man in his 60s and the business has run on the Port Wallace property since the 1970s.

Right now, the property in question is a construction material storage yard which is common in the area, with the large and noisy Conrad Bros construction storage yard 700 metres down the road.

But someone who lives nearby lodged a complaint with 311 about the “eye sore” that is the construction material storage yard.
