Wow Halifax, you look hot today!

Sometimes it’s nice to know you’re not alone and today I feel so validated. As you know, I’ve had to lay down some ground rules for how we interact with each other because we’re embarking on a revolutionary new era of respect and kindness, even when we don’t see eye-to-eye.

Here are some examples of why I had to set boundaries—and don’t worry, the cat is alive and well.

Even since starting back to work just last week, I have been told to shut the f$%k up several times AND that I’m so stupid that this newsletter is “unreadable”.

Although I might make light of it for self-preservation reasons, online harassment is a real problem that disproportionately affects women. According to a UNESCO study (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), human rights defenders, activists, journalists and lawmakers face increased rates of violence both online and offline—73% of women journalists experienced online violence in the course of their work.

The findings reveal significant mental health consequences: 25% of women journalists surveyed reported being diagnosed with or treated for anxiety and/or depression and 13% reported experiencing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Yarmouth politician Pam Mood is taking a stand by making the decision to block abusive online comments—and she says it’s a decision she wish she made years ago, adding “I have no problem with a difference of opinions, but to actively use abusive words…nobody should put up with that.” Preach queen 👑

Mood—who has served as mayor in Yarmouth for 14 years—said harassment and death threats against Nova Scotia politicians have spiked in recent years and said she’s concerned about the future of politics in Nova Scotia if the threats and harassment go unaddressed.

Death threats? What are we doing here people? This is Nova Scotia politics we’re talking about! I say with the deepest empathy for whatever trauma has caused people to lash out in this way: this is a YOU problem, so get a grip and seek therapy. Here is a list of mental health resources available in Nova Scotia.

We need women in activism, journalism and politics now more than ever. We can’t and wont be driven out by cowards behind keyboards—statistically, you guessed it, men.

Research by the Canadian Women’s Foundation indicates that patterns of online abuse mirror offline gender-based violence, with male perpetrators often using the internet to enforce gender hierarchies, silence women in public spaces and spread anti-feminist rhetoric.

I hope Pam sets the Mood for future behaviour. See what I did there?

Love and light!
