Hello Halifax 👋

As mentioned last week, the amazing newsletter editor extraordinaire Julie is off for the foreseeable future to handle the monumental task of having a baby and then caring for said baby.

In her place is I, Brendyn. I’ve been writing for The Coast for over a year now, and I’m excited to pick up where Julie left off—mainly, taking our municipal and provincial governments to task for the things they should be doing and the things they should not be doing.

Instead of complaining for my first newsletter intro, how about we start off with a little positivity? I’d hazard to guess you don’t know me all that well, so in the name of civility and friendship, let’s do a quick ice breaker. Here are a few things about myself.

First, I have three cats—all of which are terrible little things that make my life simultaneously miserable and fantastic. Here’s a photo with descriptions of each one, and please let me know which is your favourite (I know who mine is).

Gizmo, left, is a big stupid boy who wakes me up at 5am for food and loves to be picked up for a cuddle. Lily, middle, is a lovely old lady who sleeps on my fiancee’s pillow every night and steals cheese from the kitchen. June, right, worships Satan and plays D&D on the weekends.

Second, if I’m not writing or organizing events at my other gig, I’m playing video games. Pokemon ensnared me at a young age and now I can’t get through a day without booting up an RPG or action game. I’m currently making my way through Hollow Knight for the first time.

Third, I love music, especially local artists. If you have any favourites you’d like to share, please do. I mostly listen to indie rock and punk, but I love all genres equally.

That’s enough about me. What about yourself? Please sound off in the comments a quick little fact about you so I can get to know the lovely readers of The Coast before I inevitably make all of you upset with my overly political ramblings, which will be starting tomorrow. Lucky you! 😁

🤔 Need To Know

🚒 The union representing Halifax firefighters is calling for the resignation of the city’s fire chief—they say concerns around wildfire response and staffing issues have eroded their trust in leadership.

🚨 RCMP charge two youth following an armed home invasion in Lower Sackville—the invasion involved a pellet gun and a sensory irritant, affecting a group of youth who had gathered in the residence.
