šŸ—žļø Dog days of summer fun

Plus, Bayers Lake wildfire held and evacuation order lifted, Health Department has plans to open a menopause clinic and Citadel High teen pleads guilty to seven weapons charges.

The Coast

Happy Friday Halifax,

As my maternity leave looms large, I’m actually starting to feel less excited and more guilty that I’ll have to take a break from providing this newsletter to you—my incredible readers. I haven’t even taken a real vacation since I started this work, mainly because I care about it a lot and don’t want to let you down.

You know who has no such qualms? JD Vance. Imagine feeling completely entitled—and frankly expendable—enough to be able to take 7 (seven) total vacations since taking office as vice president. How much do you have to suck at your job for it to be way better for your employer if you’re just….never there?

Right now he’s in the UK, where crowds gathered with signs of his inflated face telling him to basically GTFO. This is just weeks after his famously dramatic trip to Nantucket for his 41st birthday where he forced the Secret Service to raise the water level in a river for optimal kayaking conditions. I’ve been asked to do some especially useless work in my time—I did work at SaltWire lest we forget—but THIS is just too much.

Oh—and earlier in July, as immigration raids terrorized Los Angeles and protesters filled the streets, Vance took his wife and three kids just south of the city to Disneyland to ride rollercoasters and mug with Mickey Mouse—when he wasn’t awkwardly chasing after his kids šŸ‘ šŸ‘ šŸ‘

@jojofromjerz

Of fucking course JD Vance #runs like this šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

For the record, here are all the places that have vocally communicated how much they hate JD Vance when he visited their spaces: Nantucket, California, India, UK, Greenland, Rome…and I’m going to go ahead and assume his matrimonial bedroom.

Let this be your inspiration to take that vacation you’ve been putting off! And have a safe and restful weekend.

Love and light!

– Julie

CITY

Summer isn't over yet, here are some weekend activities for Haligonians

šŸ“ø Credit: Submitted

We’re in the sweet spot of summer — still warm enough for patios, park days and waterfront walks, but the evenings are starting to hint at fall. August always moves fast, and before we know it, the leaves will turn, the air will sharpen, and the city will trade its sandals for sweaters.

But right now, there’s still time to chase the sun, pack in a few more late nights, and make the most of every golden hour left.

From rock concerts to fashion shows, Halifax is buzzing with late-summer events worth chasing—get the full rundown of what’s on the go this weekend.

šŸ¤” Need To Know

šŸš’ A wildfire that threatened communities in west Halifax has been held and evacuation orders have been lifted—officials said dousing operations continue on Thursday morning after relentless heat and work by crews since Tuesday afternoon.

šŸ‘€ Nova Scotia Crime Stoppers is asking for the public's help to identify a man they believe deliberately set a fire at a Nova Scotia Power station in Fall River—an investigation found that a man used a torch to set ablaze a spool of wire next to a building on the property.

ā˜” Rain in the forecast over the next day will be a welcome help for crews battling wildfires across the province—a cold front will move through the region Thursday night, bringing scattered showers.

šŸŒ™āœØ The Last North by Night Market of the summer lights up The Local's back patio, August 15th, from 7-10 PM. Don't miss it!*

šŸ» If you know, you know. The Pint is Halifax’s summer HQ—epic eats, ice-cold drinks, and patio vibes that go full East Coast. Hot take? This is it.*
