The Coast

Oh hey Halifax, didn’t see you there,

Look, I’m all for healthcare innovation, ok? I’m a believer that money should be put into research on preventative medicine and also medicine medicine. I mean, without this academic research, we would never have vital information like the impact of endometriosis on male partners 🙄

But at a certain point, I must simply draw the line and I believe this ground-breaking study about the positive effects of walking fast is that point. There MUST be better ways to spend money ear-marked for health promotion and prevention.

So, basically, I picture the conversation in the fancy university lab going something like this:

Doctor: So, we know that walking is good for you, right?

Team: Yes!

Doctor: And we know that running is good for you, right?

Team: Yes!

Doctor: But what about walking fast?

Team: Holy shit! Who even knows?

Look, I don’t have to do any further research to know the answer to this one. But I guess Vanderbilt University did because…they did. The doctor and his team of researchers found that “fast walking is good compared to slow walking”. And also that we should try to walk fast for at least 15 minutes a day. Fast walking has been found to have specific benefits, such as decreasing risk of heart failure, arrythmias and type 2 diabetes.

Watch out for me coming up on your right on Spring Garden today:

So, exercise is good for you. Got it. I think it’s time we ask: are we funding research that meaningfully advances medicine, or are we just spending research dollars repeatedly polishing advice that most people already understand?

I think we can safely just put that area of research to bed and maybe re-allocate that money to studying, I dunno, endometriosis, perimenopause, menopause, hormone therapy, PCOS, chronic pelvic pain, postpartum health, gender affirmation care. Just to name a few at random totally off the top of my head with no real agenda.

But until then my friends…

Love and lightning speed walking!

– Jules

Five takeaways from the EverWind data centre committee meeting

📸 Nova Scotia Legislature/Screenshot

EverWind’s CFO was one of several invitees to the Natural Resources and Economic Development Committee meeting on Tuesday, Oct 27, where MLAs were able to publicly question the energy company on their proposed $10-billion data centre planned for Point Tupper.

NSNDP and Nova Scotia Liberal party leaders Claudia Chender and Iain Rankin were present amongst several PC MLAs, asking questions of EverWind representatives, department deputies and Richmond County’s warden about the data centre, its environmental impacts and if Nova Scotians will end up paying for the strain on the province’s electrical grid.

There were softballs, hard balls, and a few answers that could be dug from the committee meeting about what regulations are (or aren’t) in place and what the government may (or may not) intend to do about it.
