🗞️ Conversation with a rock star

Plus, West Mabou Beach under threat of development proposal, one man dead after a shooting in North Preston, and space company looking to build in Nova Scotia gets a cash injection of $10 million.

Halifax Chamber of Commerce

Good morning, Halifax 👋

The last time I talked about golf in one of these intros, my email inbox was full of messages about how I don’t understand because I don’t play golf. It was all misinformation, they said. Baseless conjecture. All because I don’t swing a steel rod at a tiny ball.

While my grudge against the rich man’s sport remains strong, this intro isn’t about that. It’s about West Mabou Beach, a beautiful provincial park on the west coast of Cape Breton Island. This strip of coastline is highly valued not only to residents living in the area, but also visitors who frequent the park.

However, as you may have already seen in the news, the company Cabot Golf is looking to transform part of the park into an 18-hole golf course, coupled with a small club house and office. Some residents are understandably upset, with one Cape Breton brewery, Big Spruce Brewing, even releasing a beer called Save West Mabou Beach to advocate for the park. Personally, I think more political messaging should go on beer cans—it’s an easy conversation starter. Or ender, at that, but I digress.

While previous parks minister Tory Rushton and premier Tim Houston had originally told Cabot not to bother submitting a bid, Rushton buckled on the issue within the last few weeks, and new parks minister Kim Masland says they have indeed received a proposal for the development.

While Masland says this proposal will undergo a period of consultations with local residents and First Nations communities, she also repeated one of my favourite lines out of any politican when they mention mandatory community consultation: “Because you have a conversation doesn’t mean it’s going to happen or it’s not going to happen. It’s a conversation.”

From her description of calling Nova Scotia “open for business”, I’m leaning towards the idea that they’re going to go ahead with it no matter what residents have to say. It wouldn’t be the first time a government has ignored community feedback.

But that’s just my opinion. What do you think of it all? Does Cape Breton need another expensive golf course to tourists? Or should the park remain a destination for all? Let us know in the poll below and we’ll tally the responses at a later date.

Should the province allow Cabot Golf to develop a golf course in West Mabou Beach Provincial Park?

The province has received a proposal from Cabot Golf to develop an 18 hole golf course and a small clubhouse and office in West Mabou Beach, a scenic park located in Cape Breton. What do you think?

MUSIC WEEK INTERVIEW SERIES

Loviet talks upcoming single, RiotFest appearance and Nova Scotia Music Week

📸 Brendyn Creamer

Loviet has been an artist on my radar since I started exploring the Halifax music scene. Her blend of alt aesthetics and moody tunes with pop production was my jam, and her new single “Stiffy” only shows she’s leaning more in a rock direction. She has another single dropping on Nov. 7 titled “Cheerleader”. Stylish, savvy and sick with a guitar, Loviet is the definition of cool.

I bumped into Loviet in front of the Rodd Grand Hotel in Yarmouth on Friday, Nov. 24. Nova Scotia Music Week was in full swing and my partner and I were getting ready to head down to The Red Knight to see our most anticipated showcase: a lineup of indie rock, pop rock, and ear-shattering punk music that couldn’t be beat.

Loviet had the same idea. She had performed a showcase at The Red Knight the day before, rocking out on the same stage as names like DEADØNE, idialedyournumber and Colrain, amongst others, a day before I got into town. We struck up a quick chat, and met briefly at the bar later, where I proposed an interview for this series—the second I had nailed down for the weekend. She planned to return to her hometown in Shelburne on Saturday, but she agreed to meet in the hotel lobby on the next day.

👀 In Case You Missed It

🗳️ Earlier this month, the Nova Scotia government removed the public’s ability to file complaints about municipal politicians breaking the municipal code of conduct. This system wasn’t in place for long. The provincial government introduced the municipal code of conduct only a year ago. However, Nova Scotia Federation of Municipalities (NSFM) president and Yarmouth mayor Pam Mood told CBC a few municipalities received a flood of complaints, ranging from serious matters to complaints labelled as frivolous. For now, municipal code of conduct complaints can only be submitted by municipal councillors who are within the same government as the member they’re complaining about. The Coast’s Brendyn Creamer shares the results of a recent poll asking our readers: should regular residents be able to submit formal complaints, or should we leave it to our councillors?

🏒 Florida Panthers forward Brad Marchand returned home to Nova Scotia to sub in as hockey coach for a U18 team while his friend, the regular coach, is grieving his 10-year-old daughter—Marchand says he didn’t hesitate to come home, even in the middle of the NHL’s regular season.

🚲 The Serious Incident Response Team is looking to return five bikes they believe were stolen within the last year—this comes after a police officer was charged for allegedly selling stolen bikes amongst other property.
