🗞 Here comes the rain

Plus, Doneil Henry is settling into life in Halifax

Good morning!

Forecasts are calling for rain through much of this week, continuing a trend for Halifax’s 2023 summer: A shower, it seems, is never far away—even when it’s sunny.

On rainy nights these past few weeks, I’ve been watching The Bear—a show set in a fictional Chicago kitchen, but with a real Halifax connection: Chef and co-producer Matty Matheson, who also stars in the show, spent part of his childhood in Dartmouth. The more you know.

🌦 Today’s weather: A mix of sun and cloud, with a 30% chance of afternoon showers. Risk of thunderstorms. A high of 22C (feels like 28C) and a low of 18C.

📸 The Coast

For 29 years, you—our beloved Coast reader—have been telling us about all the best things in Halifax, from where to get the best donair to the best tattoo artist in town to the HRM’s best regional councillor. We like to think it’s a special Halifax tradition: One as constant and enduring as harbour fog, or the noon cannon or the Macdonald Bridge shutting down to traffic. The formula never changes: You vote; we listen.

The Best of Halifax Awards have seen Hall of Famers inducted—from Pete’s smoothies to Ray’s falafels—and sparked a thousand debates across bar tables, bus stops and barbershops. (Because what’s better than an award, if not arguing with your friends about it?)

The nominee ballots have been tallied. Now, it’s time for the final vote in the 2023 Best of Halifax Readers’ Choice Awards.

Cast your votes before Sept. 10 and help decide this year’s winners.

OPENING AUGUST 22!

Plan on visiting the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 for Hearts of Freedom - Stories of Southeast Asian Refugees, a new exhibition opening August 22. Hearts focuses on the incredible stories of Southeast Asian refugees from Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, and the impact of the Vietnam War, the Lao Secret War, and the Cambodian Genocide which forced millions to flee their homelands and seek safety in other countries. These courageous refugees risked their lives, journeyed to different host countries, and travelled thousands of miles to Canada.

The exhibition tells the stories of these survivors, in their own words and through their unique perspectives, adding to the fabric of the Canadian history of immigration.

The Wanderer Grounds podcast: Doneil Henry is loving life in Halifax

First, he helped Canada’s men’s soccer team qualify for their first World Cup appearance in 36 years. One year later, Doneil Henry is a vocal leader on a young and talented Halifax Wanderers club looking to reach the playoffs for the first time since 2020—and perhaps even challenge for the Canadian Premier League title.

In this week’s episode of The Wanderer Grounds podcast, Coast reporters Martin Bauman and Matt Stickland catch up with Henry after the Wanderers’ 3-0 win over Vancouver FC to talk about his arrival in Halifax, bringing his experience to a still-novice club, teammate Dan Nimick’s Major League Soccer potential and his favourite place to eat in his new adopted city.
