Good morning!

Ok, prepare yourself Halifax because I’m about to write about something that I don’t have a strong opinion on either way and can clearly see both sides of the argument. This is the one and only time this will happen this fiscal year, so enjoy.

There has been a lot of chatter online about Gen Z bringing their Starby’s iced latte into job interviews. They are being dragged for this behaviour all over reddit and TikTok, with some saying it’s totally unprofessional and some defending their right to bring the cold caffeination of their choice.

Argument for: The hiring companies that are the most irate about Gen Z candidates bringing iced coffee to a job interview are the probably the ones that need Gen Zers on staff the most.

Vocal fry and New Balance sneakers aside, the wonderful people of Gen Z know their shit about the internet, social media, SEO and how to create content that will be actually engaging. If you are a company that is run by people of a certain vintage, you NEED this skill set now more than ever!

I worked for a now extinct newspaper conglomerate that shall not be named and my boss was Gen X (so like 50 at the time). Now, this woman was, without jest or exaggeration, the meanest boss I’ve ever had in my whole career. She also thought she was brilliant and we were all dumb-dumbs, but the problem was, she didn’t even know what she didn’t know because she had aged out of online literacy.

Example: Late at night, she would send the whole team these giant images of a competitor’s IG “post”—and I mean so big that you had to scroll sideways three full times to see the picture. She’s be like “Look what they’re doing! I see this post every time on Instagram! We need to do THIS idiots!”.

This illustrates two primary items of concern. First, she didn’t know how to take a basic screenshot. Second, she didn’t realize that she was seeing that “post” so many times because it was an effing AD that the company paid for her to be served up a hundred times a day.

The moral of this story is: This woman would scoff and be absolutely disgusted at the utter disrespect of a Gen Z candidate bringing an iced latte into an interview with her. But SHE needs this Gen Z rock star the MOST—to protect her from herself.

Much shorter and less personal argument against: You need to put your best foot forward at a job interview, so maybe having a sweaty, melty cup in your hand makes you look like you just came from Urban Outfitters and popped in for the interview.

Also, if you are hiring a person that is going to be client-facing, you want them to look tidy and match the vibe of the industry. Iced coffee could read sloppy and nobody wants a potentially sloppy individual representing them.

Finally, it gives main character energy; like I can do whatever I want, eff you, take me or leave me. Which could leave a bad taste in the interviewer’s mouth.

Would I do it? No. But I’m a traumatized millennial with authority issues that likes her coffee hot as hell.

Unionization can be a tedious process—especially so in Nova Scotia.

Often times, it requires signing membership cards more than once and constant delays in the certification and arbitration process. That's if you can get enough people on board in the first place—some employers have tools to convince workers into shying away from unionization, sometimes at the threat of their livelihood.

These issues, among others, are outlined in a new report by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA) analyzing the barriers to unionization in Nova Scotia. Based on interviews with 14 union stakeholders (organizers, labour-side employment lawyers, unionized staff, academics, etc.), it offers several policy recommendations to Nova Scotia labour legislation.

🚨 A 22-year-old woman is facing a manslaughter charge in the death of a man who was living at an encampment when he died—Kiara Marie Organ, 22 is expected in a Dartmouth court on Tuesday.

🚨 A youth told police they were being followed and when they got into a vehicle in Middle Sackville things escalated—investigators determined the man’s actions were hate-motivated and laid several offences against him including uttering threats and criminal harassment.
