The Coast

Good morning Halifax 👋

Today, I wanted to tell you a little story that healed my weathered heart.

As I’ve mentioned previously, I tend to focus on the doom and gloom of the everyday. Whether it’s the endless stream of bad news that I see while scrolling on my phone, or the little obstacles that I tend to blow up into big ones, it’s safe to say I’m a little tired.

However, yesterday, I went to one of my favourite restaurants in Truro to grab a bite to eat. I had been dreaming day in and out of their lemongrass chicken, a plate I hadn’t had in about two months or so.

When I arrived, I said hello to the owner and sat down at the table. They took my order, and as I was doing my usual thing when I eat alone at a restaurant (the aforementioned doom-scrolling), the owner came up to my table.

He mentioned that the last time I came in, I had ordered an extra helping of rice to go with my lemongrass chicken. At the time, I had been preoccupied with a conversation with a friend I ran into there, so I forgot about the extra rice altogether, as did the owner. I suppose that when he saw my face, it came back to him. I hadn’t thought of it until he mentioned it.

To make up for it, he gave me an extra rice to go with my lunch for free. I was hesitant to accept, but rather than respond with negativity, I did so with appreciation, leaving enough of a tip that (I hope, at least) covered the rice and a little extra.

The moral of the story? Even if everything around you—mainly, the internet—seems to be a complete and utter nightmare, we can always find kindness in the human connections we make along the way. I was reminded of that by a restaurateur remembering my face and an insignificant detail of my last visit.

So, I’m writing this today to return the favour. If you’re in the Truro area soon, please try Lovus Coffee and Tea. I recommend a cold Vietnamese milk coffee and their lemongrass chicken stir-fry—it keeps me coming back every time.

Show some kindness today!

Seven Halifax concerts you won't want to miss this fall

📸 The Coast Illustration

As the leaves turn colour and fall from the trees, it’s no surprise to any of us that the summer is over, and that’s a shame. There were so many opportunities to take in the sun while listening to some old faves or new releases, and there were so many great concerts that we couldn’t even begin to count.

However, even with a chill in the wind, nothing stops our favourite artists from taking to the stage. So, to ensure you don’t trap yourself at home until next summer, we’re going to count down some local concerts that you can check out. Summer may be a great time to take in all the music, but artists work year-round, so find a show that feels right for you and get out there.

🤔 Need To Know
