🗞️ Chaos at the Neptune
Plus, Nova Scotia leasing land for North America's first whale sanctuary, Africville Genealogy Society board dismissed, and youths charged in violent assault.
Hey folks 👋
Not to get too political this morning, but I highly doubt Pierre Poilievre stands much of a chance during his leadership review at the end of the year.
After giving up a federal election Conservatives were bound to win before Mark Carney’s became leader of the Liberal Party, I figured Poilievre might be done for. He had lost his own seat, had to find a comfortable Conservative seat in Alberta to make his way back to the House of Commons, and throughout all of this, most reasonable conservatives have criticized him for his extremist rhetoric.
What’s worse is that Poilievre has now taken to criticizing the RCMP. If there’s one thing conservative voters don’t like, it’s people who criticize the cops.
Poilievre went on the conservative podcast/YouTube channel Northern Perspective to say that former prime minister Justin Trudeau broke the law during the Aga Khan scandal and later may have broken the law during the SNC-Lavalin affair. He would follow this up by saying that the RCMP covered it all up and that the police force’s leadership is “despicable”.
Some Conservative members told CBC News under anonymity that this essentially proves Poilievre will never be PM. He’s too focused on his election defeat, his long-standing hatred of Trudeau, and refuses to curb his rhetoric to address current Liberal policies.
I think conservatives east of the prairies won’t miss Poilievre if he does go. He’s pushed an extreme conservative agenda too focused on social issues that the typical progressive conservative will never vote for, even if they like their local MP. Coming after the police over conspiracies will only push his base further away.
What’s funny enough is that there was some speculation after Poilievre’s election defeat that maybe Tim Houston would shoot his shot for federal leadership. It was all rumours, but as much as I disagree with our premier, I’d much rather his style of conservatism over the guy who took off his glasses so he could look cool to 20-somethings that get their politics from podcasts.
Have a great Thursday, everyone!
